Saturday, Jan 08, 2011: The Punjab government has agreed to offer support to connect all five holy ‘Takhts’ of the Sikhs-- Anandpur Sahib, Amritsar, Bhatinda, Nanded and Patna. This decision has been taken considering the huge response received for the luxury train journey ‘Spiritual Journey to the Guru’s Abode’, organized by The Luxury Trains, one of the leading consolidators and GSAs for luxury trains in India, on the chartered luxury train- Deccan Odyssey. The luxury train recently completed its maiden journey from Delhi covering all the five holy ‘Takhts’ of the Sikhs.

For the inaugural journey Punjab Tourism offered logistical support for the train throughout Punjab. Apart from the government machinery, the Sikh Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC), the apex body of Sikh community, organized traditional welcome for the train at all places.

Speaking with TravelBiz Monitor on board the luxury train, Hira Singh Gabria, Minister for Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Punjab government said, “It’s a historic moment for Punjab Tourism and the government would extend help to make the journey a regular one. We had approached the Indian Railways few years back with a project for a luxury train to connect all important religious destinations. We even deposited our share of `13 crore to the Indian Railways as well. However, in spite of our best of efforts the project did not materialise. This is the reason why we have decided to support this private initiative.”

The Minister informed that the state government will approach the Prime Minister and Railways Minister shortly to demand waive off the haulage charge of `70 lakh for this train so that the journey can be made affordable. He said that there’s lot of demand for such a product from the Sikh community settled abroad. “It’s not easy to visit all the five Takhts in one go. The Luxury Trains has made it possible by commencing this train, and I appreciate their effort,” added Gabria.

Looking at the success of the maiden journey, The Luxury Trains has decided to run another train in March this year. “The response has been quite good for the train. We are planning another trip in the last week of March,” said Sajivve Trehaan, CEO, The Luxury Trains.
