Two days ago Turban Up! transformed Yonge-Dundas Square into a rainbow of brightly coloured turban cloth, a free community kitchen, a place for artists to share their talent, and an arena for traditional Sikh martial arts.
The event, organized by the Sikh Youth Federation, strived to engage Canadians from all walks of life, take the mystery out of the turban in a fun and colourful way, and break down the barriers that divide us.
Through community engagement and positivity, organizers aimed to put an end to the type of intolerance experienced by Supninder Singh Khehra who, on a trip to Montreal this April, was attacked because of his turban. By giving others an opportunity to experience the turban, they broke down walls of separation and invited Canadians to ask us questions, learn about Sikh culture, understand and #ExperienceSikhi
The event generated local news coverage and to the pride of the Sikh Community it garnered letters of recognition from the Mayor of Toronto, John Tory and the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau.
Congratulations Sikh Youth Federation!
