26 Aug. 2010 - PATIALA: The president of Punjab medical council Dr. Manmohan Singh said that risk of heart disease was very high as Punjabis have been living luxurious lifestyle.
Dr. Manmohan Singh, a well known cardiologist, was speaking to media after inaugurating the Catheterization Laboratory’ (Cath Lab) here at the Columbia Asia Hospital.
He said that “Punjab is one of the richest states of the country having high per capita income. Since socio-economic status has an important role to play in the causation of ‘Coronary Artery Disease’ (CAD), Punjab automatically falls as a victim”.
He added that CAD was assuming large proportions in the population due to various factors like changing lifestyles, lack of exercise, stress and habits like alcohol and smoking.
Pointing to a study conducted in Patiala he said that it was concluded that risk factors responsible for Heart Disease / CAD like diabetes mellitus, hypertension, smoking and obesity are most prevalent in this region.
Speaking at the launch of the cath lab, Dr Ratnadeep Chaskar, General Manager, Columbia Asia Hospital- Patiala said, "We are proud to announce the launch of much required ‘Cath Lab’ facility at Columbia Asia Hospital, Patiala. The department’s focus is to provide expeditious management of heart attack patients with an emphasis on timely opening of occluded coronary arteries, and also to help the public in preventing heart disease and cure.

Medical College, Patiala), DM, Cardiology (PGIMER, Chandigarh) and Consultant Interventional Cardiologist would be in charge of the cath lab at the Columbia Asia Hospital, Patiala. He has expertise in coronary interventions through radial route. He is Gold medallist from PGI Chandigarh for his best published research in cardiovascular medicine.
