Patiala House, 2011 Hindi movie review

Patiala House (45K)

Happiness, sadness, relationships, accomplishments and losses dominate our lives. But relationships are the major aspect which can make or break a home. There are lots of relations surrounding us like husband and wife, father and son, mother and daughter, etc… Father-son relation is one of the most valuable relation. Every father has lots of dreams and expectations from his son and if the son fulfills his father’s dreams then that father finds himself as happiest person of the world. But where there is love there is conflict as well. Patiala House is about the conflict between father (Rishi Kapoor) and son (Akshay Kumar).

Akshay has worked two times on a similar plot with Mr. Bachchan in 'Ek Rishta' and 'Waqt'. Both movies got critical appreciation and worked on box-office as well.

Few queries that ponder your mind will be …

Will Akshay get rid of his brainless comedies?
Will Nikhil Advani repeat the history of 'Kal Ho Na Ho'?
Will you like to stay in Patiala House?

Lets find out !

Story:

Parghat Singh Kahlon aka Gattu (Akshay Kumar) is running a grocery shop at Southall, London in-spite of his dream to be a fast bowler. His father Gurtej Singh Kahlon (Rishi Kapoor) is a leader of Indian community and he is against British people. Gattu has to sacrifice his dreams because his father does not want him to play for a British cricket team. But at the age of 34 he gets a chance to play for England. Now will he play cricket or sacrifice his dreams again?

Patiala House is all about this!

Why you want to stay in Patiala House

Every movie stands on the basis of its screenplay. Akshay’s last dozen movies have suffered the weak screenplay dilemma. But this time he has winner on his hands due to correct choice of the script. We have watched lots of family dramas and father son conflict before. But, Patiala House is something more than the emotional drama.

Movie starts with daily routine and Akshay’s narration about himself. A guy who wants to play cricket for English cricket team but he has to sacrifice his dreams for his father’s wish because his father doesn’t like English people. Nikhil has showed all the shades of Gattu’s life. In one scene if Akshay makes you cry in very next scene Anushka will make you laugh with her innocent jolly performance.

Emotional scenes between Akshay, Rishi kapoor and Dimple Kapadia have been well executed.

However, movie does not have the scope of love but Akshay and Anushka’s chemistry looks good. Nikhil didn’t put so many love songs and love sequences which is also good and goes in the favor of the movie. Second half is simple outstanding. Lots of funny sequences especially when Akshay plays cricket matches and his all family members try to hide Akshay’s secret from his father Rishi Kapoor. However, movie does not have too much cricket scenes but whatever scenes are there they are well shot. Especially Akshay vs. Andrew Symonds sequence gives you feeling of real cricket. You can watch your favorite players in action like Andrew Symond, Karman Akmal, Nasir Hussain , Mahesh Manjrekar, Harshal Gibbs and lots of more. Even for Sallu fans they can see Poster of Veer as well.

Why you don’t want to stay in Patiala House

patialahouse2 (7K)Movie does not have so many negative points that Nikhil managed everything very instinctly. But, he forgot to tell us relation between all boys and girls. There are almost a dozen cousins but no one whos who is who and what are the relations between them.

Akshay Kumar has huge fan follwing who loves him to watch in comic roles. But, this time Akshay is in a serious role. May his fans won’t accept him as a helpless and crying person.

Performances:

Movie belongs to only Akshay Kumar. He starts movie with a bang and finishes it with his top notch performance. Thank God Akshay tried something different and serious and has managed to escape from his brainless comedy image. You won’t believe he is same Akshay who worked in 'TMK', 'Khatta Meetha', 'Kambakht Ishq' and 'CC2C'. Akshay will remind you of his 'Namaste London', 'Waqt' and 'Jaan e Mann' days. I can’t say he will get award but this is a really award winning performance.

Anushka Sharma is getting better and better with every next movie. She was just ok in 'Rabne Banadi Jodi'. She was good in 'Badmash Company'. She was much better in 'Band Baaja Baarat'. And now she has improved herself again in Patiala House. She looks good, she has decent dialogue delivery and she dances nicely as well. After a long time industry has been blessed with a complete heroine package in the shape of Anushka Sharma.

Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia are also good in their roles. Rishi Kapoor is back after the success of 'Do Dooni Char'. His Sardar look is really impressive.

Rest of supporting cast is also sincere in their roles. Especially boy Manmeet and girl Ashpreet have done great job. Overall:

Patiala House is a well made movie which has an excellent and balanced screenplay. Akshay, Anushka and Rishi Kapoor’s performances and Nikhil Advani’s intelligent direction has made it outstanding. Punjabi Parivar, Shankar Ehsaan Loy’s good music and presence of lots of Cricket heroes make it special.

On box-office Patiala House may open on slow note but it will pick over the weekend and will be able to sustain in weekdays.

This 'House' will be liked by everyone not just patialvis and you would love to stay in Patiala House.
