Kuala Lumpur najib-tun-razak (34K)Tue May 03 2011: Appreciating the contributions made by the minority Sikh community in Malaysia towards the development of the country, the government has said that it will allocate three plots of land here to build gurudwaras.

Prime Minister Najib Razak who made the announcement yesterday at the 1Malaysia Vaisakhi Open House said, Sikhs in Malaysia had played a pivotal role in the development of the nation, especially in the past when they defended the country against the Japanese invasion during World War II.

"I was touched by the spirit of the Sikhs, many of whom had entered the police and armed forces then", Najib was quoted as saying by 'New Straits Times' today.

"There are three important values which I can relate to the Sikh community. They are renowned for their courage, loyalty and the ethics of being a hardworking people.

And for that, I thank them for their contributions to the country", he said.

Najib invited the Sikhs to work with the government to transform Malaysia by 2020.

He said the government would help the community fulfill its needs, such as through the allocation of the plots of land to build gurudwaras.

"This is an example of how if we work as stakeholders with the government we are able to bring benefit to the community", Najib said.

Najib said the best way for the Sikh community to work with the government was to be its partner through the 1Malaysia concept.

Najib also praised the Sikh community for its success in bringing Punjabi language classes to schools.

Highlights of the event included bhangra performances and a showcase of Sikh culture and heritage.
