LUDHIANA: Curfew in the city continued for the second consecutive day on Sunday and the situation remained tense but peaceful. Security forces could be seen on every nook and corner of the city in an endeavour to maintain peace and calm in the city in wake of the protest by radical Sikh groups against the government for killing a protester and injuring over a dozen in police firing.
The leaders of the Sikh radical groups staged dharna on the Samrala Chowk, where a 58-year-old protester Darshan Singh, an autorickshaw driver was killed in police firing on Saturday.
Radical group leaders including Jasbir Singh Rhode, Daljeet Singh Dhuma, Ranjit Singh Dhadrian and others demanded registration of an FIR against chief minister Prakash Singh Badal, MLA Harish Bedi and the cops who opened fire on the Sikh protesters.
As all these Sikh radical groups gathered to attend the cremation of the deceased protester, rumours of situation getting tense kept doing rounds in city. Though, buses and trains moved normally yet people remained cautious and preferred cancelling their trips to other cities. “I had to got to Delhi but I did not go because you never know in such a situation what happens,” said Bhagawant Singh, a resident of Dhandra village.
Apart from the commercial establishments, the major impact of the turmoil in city was seen on the marriages. This being a marriage season many knots were to be tied during this period, these marriages were either solemnised very simply with altered plans or were cancelled altogether. “It was my niece’s wedding at Royal Palace on Chandigarh road on Sunday morning, but we had to cancel the programme as curfew was clamped in the area and the boy’s family and relatives were also not ready to come in such a situation. We were left with no other option rather than to cancel the wedding,” said Amarpura resident Davinder Pal Singh.
Deputy commissioner Vikas Garg told TOI that the situation was under control as of now. He said, “We would take any decision only after reviewing the situation. As far as the call for bandh is concerned we are all prepared to deal with any situation.”
Later, Garg informed that relaxation in curfew was being given from 6 pm to 8 pm to areas falling under the police stations Model Town, Sarabha Nagar and
