The Guru went out and sat on the bank of the river in a state of Samadhi- perfectly in tune with the cosmos. As he closed his eyes, the spirits of Kali Yug, the Age of Darkness, trembled at his appearance and let all their fury rage round him.

Thunder, lightning and myriads of formless frightening shapes robed in blackness crowded round sharpening their five-pointed weapons of passion, anger, greed, delusion and conceit: emitting flames of desire and wielding the doubled-edged sword of hate and harm. He let them pass and remained calm like a lotus amidst stormy waters.

Then there passed before his mind palaces and pleasure domes flowing with milk and honey and swarming with maidens of unsurpassed beauty. The Guru smiled and sang:

Pearl-built peerless palaces
Adorned with precious gems
Fragrant with all the scents of earth-
These delude fools who forget His Name,
Who have not Him in their hearts.
My Master has told me
There is no other place like His.

Then there passed before his eyes the richness of earth and all the treasured wealth that lies hidden under the sea and mountains. The Guru again smiled and sang:

Were earth blazing with diamonds,
And sparkling with rubies,
Overflowing with maidens of glamorous beauty,
These delude only fools
Who have not Him in their hearts.

Then, it seemed to him that the kingdom of earth was at his feet. He again smiled and sang:

What does it matter if I become a king,
And command mighty armies,
And occupy a golden throne,
And like the wind my commands encompass the earth?
These delude fools only
Who have not Him in their hearts.

Then it seemed as if he was tempted by the offer of supernatural powers and sovereignty over nature, but he rejected these with the remark,

If I exercise supernatural powers
And can create wealth at a gesture
Can appear and disappear at will
And thus win popular respect,
These delude fools only
Who have not Him in their hearts.

The Guru discarded all that the earth and heavens could offer and with his mind as calm as a placid lake, he lost himself in contemplation and became one with the Supreme.

Next morning people said they saw him walk straight into the river and disappear entirely from sight. It was thought that he had drowned and his sister and brother-in-law mournfully searched the water for his body.

The Guru, however, had ascended to the plane of Truth and appeared before the True One. On the third day he reappeared with a luminous aura around him. Crowds gathered and in a trance he pronounced the first principle of his faith

Known by the grace of the Guru

Meditate on the True Name-

True in the beginning
True in all ages
He is true now
And he shall ever be true, says Nanak.

He is True and His Name is true
He is and He shall be
He who has arranged
This play of the Universe,
This material world,

In various forms and hues.
He shall never pass away.
He enjoys the sight of His own artistry,
To His own Eternal Glory.
He is the all-powerful.
Subject to no other command.
He is the Lord of lords, the King of kings.
All live under His will.

In a state of ecstasy, he continued.

You are all wisdom, omniscient,
Deeper than the oceans,
How could a fish ascertain
The limits of an ocean.
You are everywhere,
Wherever I look,
There you are.
Separated from you,
Like a fish I die.
I know not the fisherman
I know not the noose of his net.
I am aware of only one thing,
He is everywhere,
He is not far away,
All acts are performed
In his presence.
He sees all.
Men forget to serve Him
Or to remember His Name.
They enjoy what He gives.
There is no door but His door.
Nanak the suppliant says
My soul and body are His sacrifice.

Then raising his eyes, he pronounced an Invocation.

You are near, you are far,
You are all in all,
You see, you hear
You create this Universe,
What pleases You,
That is the only right action.

Thus imbued with the spirit of God, the Guru turned toward the town to again kindle the hearts of others with the love of the Lord which burned in his own.

El Guru salió y se sentó en la ribera del río en un estado de Samadhi - en perfecta sintonía con el cosmos. Al cerrar sus ojos, los espíritus de Kali Yug, que es la Era de la Oscuridad, temblaron ante su presencia, y dejaron caer toda su furia alrededor de Guru Nanak. Trueno, rayos y miriadas de figuras amedrentadoras, sin forma y vestidas de negro, lo rodearon y apuntaron hacia él las cinco puntas de sus armas: pasión, enojo, codicia, engaño y vanidad. Emitieron llamas de deseo y empuñaron la espada de doble filo, del odio y del daño. Guru Nanak las dejó pasar y permaneció calmado, como un loto entre aguas tormentosas.

Luego pasaron por su mente palacios y lugares de placer, fluyendo leche y miel y bullendo de doncellas de belleza sin igual. El Guru sonrió y cantó:

Palacios incomparables hechos de perlas,
adornados con piedras preciosas, y con las
fragancias de todos los perfumes de la tierra.
Estos engañan a los necios que olvidan Su Nombre,
a quienes no Lo tienen en sus corazones.
Mi Amo me dijo que no hay otro lugar como el Suyo.
Luego pasó ante sus ojos la opulencia de la tierra y de todas las riquezas
atesoradas que yacen bajo los mares y montañas.

El Guru otra vez sonrió y cantó:

Si estuviera la tierra llameando con diamantes,
centelleando con rubíes,
y rebosando con doncellas de glamorosa belleza,
esto engañaría sólo a los necios
que no Lo tienen en sus corazones.

Luego, le pareció que el reino de la tierra estaba a sus pies. Sonrió una vez más y cantó:

¿De qué sirve convertirme en rey,
y comandar ejércitos poderosos,
y ocupar un trono dorado,
y que mis órdenes envuelvan la tierra como el viento?
Esto engaña sólo a los necios
que no Lo tienen en sus corazones.

Luego pareció como si estuviera tentado por la oferta de poderes sobrenaturales y la soberanía sobre la naturaleza, pero rechazó todo con esta acotación:

Si usara poderes sobrenaturales
y pudiera crear riquezas con un gesto.
Si pudiera aparecer y desaparecer a voluntad
y así ganar respeto popular.
Esto engaña sólo a los necios
que no Lo tienen en sus corazones.

El Guru descartó todo lo que la tierra y los cielos le pudieran ofrecer y, con su mente tan calmada como un plácido lago, se sumió en contemplación y se convirtió en uno con el Supremo.

A la mañana siguiente, la gente dijo que lo habían visto caminar directo hacia el río y desaparecer completamente de vista. Pensaron que se había ahogado, y su hermana y su cuñado tristemente buscaron su cuerpo en las aguas.

El Guru, sin embargo, había ascendido al plano de la Verdad y apareció ante el Verdadero. El tercer día reapareció con un aura luminosa a su alrededor. La muchedumbre se congregó y, en un trance, Guru Nanak pronunció el primer principio de su fe.

No hay más que un Dios.
Verdad es Su Nombre.
Hacedor de todas las cosas.
Libre de miedo y odio.
Eterno, sin nacimiento, auto-existente.
Él es conocido solo por la gracia del Guru.
Mediten en el Nombre Verdadero.

Él era Verdad en el principio.
Ha sido Verdad en todas las épocas.
Él es verdad aun ahora.
Y, oh Nanak, El siempre será verdad.

Él es Verdadero y Su Nombre es verdadero.
Él es y será Él.
Quien ha arreglado
este juego del Universo,
este mundo material,
en sus varias formas y matices.
Nunca va a morir.
Disfruta de la vista de su propio arte,
para Su propia Gloria Eterna.
Es el todo-poderoso.
No está sujeto a ninguna otra dominación.
Es el Señor de los señores, el Rey de reyes.
Todos viven bajo Su voluntad.

En el mismo estado de éxtasis, Guru Nanak continuó.

Tú eres toda sabiduría, omnisciente (que todo lo sabe).
Más profundo que los océanos.
¿Cómo podría el pez asegurarse
de los límites del océano?
Tú estás en todas partes,
dondequiera que mire,
allí estás.
Separado de ti,
Como un pescado muero.
No conozco al pescador,
ni conozco el lazo de su red.
Sé sólo una cosa,
que Él está en todas partes.
No está lejos.
Todos los actos se realizan
en su presencia.
Él lo ve todo.
El hombre se olvida de servirlo
o de recordar Su Nombre.
pero disfruta de lo que Él le da.
No hay otra puerta más que Su puerta.
Nanak el suplicante dice:
mi alma y mi cuerpo son Su sacrificio.

Luego, levantando los ojos, pronunció una Invocación.

Tú estás cerca, Tú estás lejos,
Tú estás en todo.
Tú ves, Tú escuchas.
Tú creaste este Universo.
Lo que te complace a Ti,
es la única acción correcta.

De este modo, imbuido del espíritu de Dios, el Guru se volvió hacia el pueblo para, con el amor del Señor que ardía en su propio corazón, encender una vez más los corazones de los demás.
