All around us the beard is making a come back. Actors and models alike are starting to grow out that peach fuzz more and more, and come on, who wants a baby face when you can have a man’s face?
Our Gurus gave us this gift for a reason and as we grow older we wait for the day we get that full dhari; it’s a Singh’s childhood goal. Seeing boys at Gurdwara in their awkward patch stage is always a blast, but what to do when that dhari comes in from all directions? Well, I’m here to shed some light on the matter.
The holy grail of all dhari products, fixo. It has been the go-to solution for our grandfathers, dads, chachas, etc. for years. But this isn’t always the best solution. Common Side Effects: Change in dhari color over time (sometimes) and if you don’t live near a Indian store or in India, it’s hard to come by.
Alternatively, you could go the hair spray or gel route. This is the trend nowadays in countries outside of India. Both are readily available at any local drugstore and all you need are some pins, a hair dryer and voila! Depending on your preference, you may or may not need a thata. Common Side Effects: Flaking of the gel and it’s almost impossible to get the perfect look without a hair dryer.
Not feeling it? You could also go half Khully with sides sprayed, or as I like to call it, the open bottom. Get some hair spray and press the sides of your dhari in, but leave the bottom open without any pins.Same side effects as hair spray apply.
Last but not least you can go Khully or as I like to call it, free styling. It’s simple: you wake up, brush that Khully dhari, and out you go. This style is beginning to become more and more popular in the US and Canada mainly because of its laid back look. However, it does come with some side effects, as it is simple and not for everyone, so wear with caution
At the end of the day it all depends on your preference.
Just remember, take care of that dhari. All products can cause damage to dhari hair. I suggest washing your dhari with conditioner every day, even if you are rocking khully — it makes all the difference!
We want to know how you rock that dhari — comment below on tips for your fellow Singhs. And Kaurs, what style do you like guys rocking? We want to hear from you too!
Keeping it Khully,
Mister Sikh Next Door.
