Gurmukhī Classes and Tutoring for English Speakers
Connecting with the Guru's Bāṇī especially tailored to English and non-native Panjābī speakers
Gurū Angad Dev Jī standardized Gurmukhī so that the Gurū's Word could be accessible to people of every background, not restricted to scholars. It is a practical system, and relatively easy to learn. As one begins to read Gurmukhī, one is, quite directly, learning to speak and hear the very words of Gurū Sāhib.
With that in mind, atTheBunga offers Gurmukhī classes and individual tutoring for English speakers and non-native Panjābī speakers who would like to engage Gurbāṇī in the script through which it has been carefully preserved. All sessions are held online, and recordings of every group class are available afterward, so participants can catch a session live one week, watch the recording the next, and continue at their own pace when life gets in the way.
Group Classes
Gurmukhī Script & Sound — the Gurmukhī system and accurate pronunciation of the elementary sounds.
Japujī Sāhib — Pauṛī by Pauṛī, with careful recitation and in-depth explanation of the meanings.
Youth Gurmukhī (ages 11–17) — a structured class for young students that introduces the Gurmukhī system through short stories, interactive exercises, and discussion of meanings.
Gurbāṇī Deep Dive — group discussion of selected readings, with multiple translations and philosophical perspectives.
Where multiple time slots are offered, participants are welcome to mix and match week to week.
Individual Sessions
Individual sessions begin from each student's current level and move at a steady pace, with space to revisit the basics whenever needed. The emphasis is on hearing and refining the fundamental sounds of Gurmukhī so that, over time, one's reading becomes clearer and more accurate. Suggestions for personal practice are offered as appropriate.
Why This Work
The intention behind atTheBunga is simple: to help students build a relationship with Gurbāṇī through the script and sound in which it lives. Reading Gurmukhī is not only a technical skill, it is a way of slowing down enough to actually hear the Gurū's words, and to feel a more experiential and personal connection to them.
