A fundraising campaign has begun to create a Sikh Garden of Remembrance in Castle Park to remember those who gave their lives in both world wars.

The garden will be a quiet place for people to visit and commemorate the Sikh members of the Indian Army who made the ultimate sacrifice.

An estimated 83,000 Sikhs lost their lives in the First World War and about 109,000 were seriously wounded.

During the First World War, Sikhs made up 20 per cent of the Indian Army in action, despite being less than two per cent of the Indian population at the time.

The four Sikh Temples in Bristol St George Sikh Temple, Church Road, Summer Hill Sikh Temple, St George, Bristol Sikh Temple, Fishponds Road Eastville and Chelsea Road Sikh Temple, Easton are working in partnership with the Bristol Sikh Resource and Community Development Centre, Barton Hill to create the garden.

The resource centre hopes to raise a further £10,000 by August 1 so that the project can go ahead. Bristol firms which support the project will have their name and company logo added to the supporter wall in the garden.
