Three-day Jor Mela

palki1 (14K)The three-day annual Jor Mela in Fatehgarh Sahib started on December 26. The Mela marks the anniversary of the martyrdom of Baba Zorawar Singh and Baba Fateh Singh, the two younger Sahibzadas of the tenth Sikh Guru, Gobind Singh.

In this regard, the Fatehgarh Sahib district administration today held a meeting with the representatives of political parties and sought their help in maintaining the religious sanctity of Jor Mela, besides maintaining peace and traffic during the fair.

Fatehgarh Sahib deputy commissioner Yashvir Mahajan said the authorities had pressed into service special buses for transporting the elderly, women, children and handicapped persons. The buses would start from various points in the town and bring and drop people who cannot walk to the main Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib.

Mahajan said special parking places have been created to park vehicles away from the mela and traffic diversions have been made for all vehicles entering the town during the three days. The DC urged the representatives of political parties to press upon their workers to cooperate in maintaining law and order and regulate traffic during the mela, so that it does not cause inconvenience to the people visiting the holy town during the mela days.

Special security arrangements have also been made for the last day of the mela on December 28, when the religious processions will be taken out. Fatehgarh SSP RS Khatra said police forces from different districts of the state had been called in for maintaining law and order during the fair. He said a big posse of police would keep vigil round-the-clock during the three-day mela to keep it incident-free.
