President Obama Urged to Visit Gurdwara
The National Sikh Campaign developed and advocated on behalf of a letter signed by 20 members of Congress addressed to President Obama requesting him to visit a Gurdwara before the end of his presidency. Sikhism is one of the five major religions in the world and Sikhs have been in the United States for over 100 years, yet no sitting American president has visited a Sikh place of worship. The time for that change is now.
A visit by President Obama would be very beneficial for our community and could help educate the American public about our religion, values, and identity. Only 10 percent of Americans know a Sikh personally and as a whole we are still unrecognizable and misunderstood by 60 percent of Americans.
His visit would draw positive attention to our identity and could potentially clear misconceptions the public holds about our faith. If more people are knowledgeable about the Sikh community, it could potentially lower the rate of hate crimes against our community.
