Join us at the SALDEF National Gala in Washington, DC, on Saturday, October 8, 2011. Along with marking our fifteenth anniversary, we will commemorate the tenth anniversary of 9/11, honor our awardees, and enjoy cultural entertainment. We are pleased to announce that Rana Singh Sodhi will be recognized for his work in promoting awareness and acceptance following his personal loss after the tragedy of 9/11. Since 9/11, Mr. Sodhi has been devoted to mobilizing the Sikh American community to create awareness about the Sikh faith, as well as serving as a spokesperson against hate and violence. Tragically, his brother, Balbir Singh Sodhi, became America's first post 9/11 hate crime murder victim. A year later, his brother, Sukhpal Singh Sodhi, was shot driving a cab in San Francisco. Despite these tragedies, Rana works to educate his fellow Americans in an attempt to prevent further hate crimes. He serves as an advisor to the Phoenix Police Department and supports the activities of several civil rights organizations. Rana's dedication to the community has been awarded by the City of Phoenix and the Anti-Defamation League.
