SURREY, BC - A team of
local Sikh youth has been dispatched to Haiti
this week to assist in the relief efforts there, as victims
of the
devastating earthquake two weeks ago continue to suffer from
a lack
of food, shelter and medical assistance. The group, three
men and
three women are going to assist in the preparation and
distribution
of food at a currently active relief camp.
In connection with the Haiti relief aid fundraising campaign by the BC Sikh Community, which raised over $1.5million, fundraiser organizers coordinated with the United Sikhs -an international humanitarian organization that has setup a food distribution camp and is run by volunteers from Canada and the United States. The group from BC left from Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara on Wednesday, January 27, after a special prayer service. .
The group of youth,
assembled by Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara,
Surrey-Delta, includes the Gurdwara Society's Assistant
Secretary
and key volunteers from the Sikh community. Many of these
volunteers
have had cooking experience preparing meals for local
homeless
shelters in the Vancouver Downtown Eastside through the Guru
Nanak's
Free Kitchen program.
In addition to important cooking supplies, the team also takes with them large pots and utensils to make over 500 meals in one use, as well as games and toys for children.
News, photographs and
updates on the relief efforts will be posted
on a new website,http://www.haitiblog.ca,
which will also include personal experiences of the current
team and
subsequent teams that are sent down.
