Watch Sangat TV coverage of Bandi Chhor Diwas / Diwali 2012 from London suburb of Southall.

Local residents of Southall came together to celebrate the Festival of Light. People gathered at Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha, Guru Nanak Darbar & Guru Amardass in old part of Southall to offer their prayers and to light up candles. It gave me an opportunity to speak to the worshipers who shared their well wishes with our viewers.

This footage was shot and aired on Diwali night Tuesday, 14th November 2012 in UK & continental Europe on Sangat Television.

The word "Bandi" is translated from Punjabi into English as "Imprisoned" (or "Prisoner"), "Chhor" as "Release," and "Divas" as "Day," rendering "Bandi Chhor Divas" from Punjabi into English as "Prisoners' Release Day."

Bandi Chhor Divas celebrates the release from prison of the Sixth Guru, Guru Hargobind Ji, and 52 other princes with him, in October 1619. Following their release, Guru Hargobind Ji arrived in Amritsar in the midst of the Diwali festival, and the day was henceforth associated with his liberation.
