(Washington, D.C.) -On Sunday August 5, 2012, Wade Michael Page started shooting people outside of the Oak Creek, Wisconsin Gurudwara. He then took his rampage indoors and wreaked havoc on the devotees preparing for that morning’s service. During this horrific massacre, Page killed 6 individuals – 5 Sikh men, and a woman - and critically wounded Lt. Brian Murphy, a police officer who responded at the scene, and many others. The horror finally ended when Lt. Murphy’s partner took Page down.

Although investigators have not officially determined Page’s motives, the Sikh community and other communities classify this act as a hate crime. This assumption is based on Page’s various ties to a Neo-Nazi group and a racist punk rock band.

We may never understand what kind of hate and anger drives a person to take the life of another, but we know it must stop. There is no room for hate crimes in any society, especially one founded on the tenant of religious freedom. In this time of tragedy and pain, it is important to respond with peace, love, and solidarity. If anger and hatred beget anger and hatred, then, peace and acceptance beget peace and acceptance.

The Kaur Foundation strives to be a vehicle for positive change. Along with other Sikh organization and advocacy groups, is working with the local community and various media outlets to raise awareness of the Sikh faith. While this tragedy is completely senseless, there are many things you can do to help eradicate hate:

  • Work with local religious communities to organize inter-faith peace vigils.
  • To donate and support the Milwaukee community, click here or here.
  • Take the time to answer questions others may have about Sikhism and the culture.
  • Follow the Kaur Foundation on the website, Twitter, and Facebook.
  • Contact the Kaur Foundation to sponsor a Cultural Safari Kit.

Our mission is to promote cultural diversity and create awareness of the Sikh identity, heritage, and secular values. Through outreach programs Kaur Foundation seeks to build institutional partnerships that nurture lasting ties in our surrounding community.

1.3 Million Students Have Access to Sikh Studies in Schools

At least 1.3 million grade-school students have access to Sikh studies in public schools. The Maryland-based Kaur Foundation’s “Cultural Safari” DVD and the accompanying Teacher’s Hand Books are approved materials by school districts across the country, including Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania and California. State and local legislators, school administrators and educators praised the Sikh education resources at the foundation’s fundraiser gala last month. The foundation’s goal for 2013 is to reach 2.5 million students.

RESOURCES

In a global society, it is essential that students have an understanding and appreciation for other cultures. In order to help raise awareness about Sikh Americans, Kaur Foundation has developed educational resources to serve as curriculum materials. The goal of this program is two-fold:

  • To use these effective educational tools in order to help close the cultural awareness gap for students who are perceived to be outside of the American mainstream
  • To incorporate the materials into the curriculum for classroom teaching and learning
