10. New Kirtan Sohila PDF - the Song of Praise

japji-sahib-english-video.jpg

Sohila (often called Kirtan Sohila) is a special nighttime prayer in Sikhi. Its name means 'Song of Praise.' It's made up of five hymns or shabads. The first three were composed by Guru Nanak Dev, the fourth by Guru Ram Das, and the fifth by Guru Arjan Dev. Kirtan Sohila is usually recited at the end of evening ceremonies in the Gurdwara. It's also recited during Sikh funeral services and before going to sleep at night.

In the original Gurmukhi form, the rhythms and melodies deeply penetrate one's being, allowing the Guru's words to mend the mind, body, and spirit. When recited correctly, this prayer brings relaxation to the mind and touches the spirit. Even as a passive listener, one can reap important benefits. Sung using one's own breath, it embodies wisdom at a profound level. Through attentive listening, a shield of protection envelops the soul. Download the new PDF here
