Raag soohee mehalaa 3 ghar 1 asattapadheeaa
Sathguru Guru Amardaasjee Maharaj speaks to us today in Soohee Raagini. sathguru patshahjee Maharaj is telling us the greatness and glory of Waheguru jee’s, God’s name and sathguru patshahjee is telling us firmly that the name of Waheguru, Wahegurujee’s naam can only be obtained through the Grace and the blessings of the Guru and by serving the Guru. sathguru patshahjee speaks to us in raag soohee – soohee ragini, mehalaa 3 – by Satguru Amardaasjee Maharaj – third Guru Nanak, ghar 1 – to be sung in the first house of rhythm, asattapadheeaa – the shabad has eight parts to it.

Ik oankaar sathigur prasaadh |
There is One eternal, timeless being Who illuminates the whole world, Who is the creator, nourisher and destroyer of all and Who is found through the Grace of the True Guru, Sathigur prasaadh. sathguru patshahjee begins the shabad and says,

Naamai hee thae sabh kish hoaa bin sathigur naam n jaapai |
Sathiguru Amardaasjee tells us that gurmukh pyaareyo all this creation that you see, everything; that which is seen and that which is unseen, sabh kish hoaa – everything that has come to be, everything – all of this has a hoaa – has come into being, has been created, from what? From naamai – that Waheguru who is known throughout the world, known throughout the creation, known throughout the universes and it also refers to the name of the Lord, the name of God. When asked where has creation come from? Sathiguru Patshahjee, Maharajee answers in Japjee Sahib – keeta pasao – this creation was created, eiko kavao – through the shabad, through the word, through the name of the Lord. In their bani Sathiguru Nanak Devjee tells us that all of the world, all of this creation is created through the shabad. In a bani which is titled Dakhanee Oankaar on Ang 929 of SGGS Jee Guru Nanak Devjee tells us, oankaar brehamaa outhapath | oankaar keeaa jin chith | oankaar sail jug bheae |oankaar baedh nirameae | – in these lines Guru Sahibjee is telling us that from Oankaar everything came into creation, from this word of Oankaar the whole world came into creation. sathguru patshahjee is telling us this great naam which created all and which resides in all. The sound of which, the vibration of which permeates through everyone. Bin sathigur naam n jaapai – Sathgurujee says if you want to obtain that name then without the Sathguru, without the True Guru you cannot jaapai – you cannot meditate, you cannot experience the naam – the name of the Lord. sathguru patshahjee is telling us that we must attach ourselves to the True Guru and only through the True Guru can we experience the name of the Lord, only if we walk through the door can we go into the house. In the same way only if we open ourselves up to the door of the Guru then we can experience the name of the Lord. Hence why the Sikh temple is called a gurdwaradwara means a door and gur means the Guru, through the door of the Guru – Gurdwara, through the Guru we are there to unite with the Lord.

Gur kaa sabadh mehaa ras meethaa bin chaakhae saadh n jaapai |
Gur kaa sabadh – the Word of the Guru, the mantar of the Guru is mehaa ras – is the greatest ras, the greatest sweetness, the greatest essence known, meethaa – it is the sweetness of them all. But Guru Sahibjee says no matter how much we describe, no matter how much we explain bin chaakhae – without tasting it ourselves, saadh n jaapai – you cannot come to experience the saadh – the taste of it. No matter how much someone describes a fruit to you, without actually experiencing it yourself there isn’t anyway of knowing that taste. So Guru Amardaasjee Maharaj is telling us the naam has created this whole universe and to find this naam – this Almighty power, it resides in the Guru.

Kouddee badhalai janam gavaaeiaa cheenas naahee aapai |
Guru Sahibjee says that those of us who turn away from the Guru kouddee badhalai janam gavaaeiaa – we waste this life for a pittance, for nothing. Our life is wasted if cheenas naahee aapai – if we don’t come to understand, to recognize the True Self. What is the True Self? What is the soul? What is the aatma?

Guramukh hovai thaa eaeko jaanai houmai dhukh n santhaapai |1|
Guru Sahibjee says if guramukh – if someone focuses their attention completely on the Guru thaa eaeko jaanai – then they come to recognize that One Waheguru, that Oneness of the Lord. When the gurmukh understands that Waheguru is permeating through everyone, Waheguru is permeating through me as well and through the whole world, as Guru Nanak Devjee mentions in the Sohila: sab mehi jot jot hai soe – within all is this Light and this Light is the Lord, is Waheguru, then houmai dhukh n santhaapai – then the pain of ego doesn’t attack that person, doesn’t afflict that person.

Balihaaree gur apanae vittahu jin saachae sio liv laaee |
Guru Amardaasjee says balihaaree gur apanae vittahu – I am a sacrifice over my Guru why? Because the Guru has attached my liv – my consciousness to that sacchae – to that True Eternal Lord.

Sabadh cheen iaatham paragaasiaa sehajae rehiaa samaaee |1| rehaao |
Maharaj says those people who cheen, who have recognized and meditated upon the shabad, within them aatham paragaasiaa – within their soul they’ve seen the Light of Waheguru. Sehajae rehiaa samaaee – they’ve merged into a state of sehaj, state of complete Bliss, state of balance and poise. Rehaao – gurujee says pause and think about this. If we look at this line again: sabadh cheen – by meditation upon the shabad, Maharaj is saying to us that, you’ll see the Light is within already. The Light of Waheguru abides within us. It’s like a candle enclosed in a glass box and the glass box is covered in soot. When the shabad cleans away the glass box we see within that the Light is there, blossoming forth but without cleaning away the darkness, without cleaning away the dirt there is darkness, but as soon as that is cleared away there is Light.

Guramukh gaavai guramukh boojhai guramukh sabadh beechaarae |
Guramukh in this case can refer to the Guru as well, the mukhi Guru – the root of all gyaan, the root of all wisdom, the greatest Guru gaavai – sings the gurbani then the guramukhs – the Sikhs who follow the Guru come to boojhai – come to understand this – the Words of the Guru. What do the gurmukhs do when the Guru sings the shabad? Guramukh sabadh beechaarae – they try and understand, they sit down and go through the shabad again and again and they beechaarae – they try and understand what the shabad is saying and through the Guru’s Grace they try and live what the Guru’s shabad is saying. They listen, accept and practice.

Jeeo pindd sabh gur thae oupajai guramukh kaaraj savaarae |
This soul and body sabh gur thae oupajaioupajai can be translated to be saved, the soul and the body both are saved. Guru gives us the external and internal knowledge to save both our body and the soul. Gurmukh kaaraj savaarae – the affairs, the duties of the gurmukh are embellished. What duty is it when we come into this world? Guru Sahibjee tells in gurbani that praanee – meaning a human being, praanee thoo aeaa lahaa lain – Guru Arjan Devjee tells us on Ang 43 of SGGS jee – that we have come onto this earth to gather together the name of the Lord. So that is the kaaraj, that is the duty that is fulfilled.

Manamukh andhaa andh kamaavai bikh khattae sansaarae |
The person who follows his/her mind is blinded by that wall of darkness, the wall of falsehood. If one is blind then andh kamaavai – whatever that person does, every action is tainted by that blindness. This is what has to be understood, that the person who has not got the Light of Truth within their life every action will be tainted with this darkness and bikh khattae sansaarae – all they do, all they gather together in this world is bikh – the poison of attachment, of anger, of ego, of desires.

How do the manmukhs plant poison? By walking outside of the Will of the Guru, through anger, through greed, through desires.

I don’t need to go anywhere I have the sixtyeight places of pilgrimage in the Guru’s Word. What does this mean? Guru Sahibjee tells us in this line thith naathai mal jaaeae – bathing in Guru’s shabad, meditating upon the Guru’s shabad again and again mal jaaeae – all of the sins of my past lives and sins of this life are washed away.

Sachaa sabadh sachaa hai niramal naa mal lagai n laaeae |
Waheguru jee’s shabad, Waheguru jee’s Word is sachaa – is Eternal and that Waheguru is Eternal. Waheguru jee’s naam is Eternal, Waheguru is Eternal and Waheguru is nirmal – Waheguru is completely pure. Those people who meditate on the shabad become eternal and become pure. Than man sabh kish har this kaeraa dhuramath kehan n jaaeae |
Guru Sahibjee tells us that to even acknowledge that and to say that everything belongs to hari, Waheguru, even just to day this those people’s duramath – those people’s mind aren’t governed by duramath – by evil thoughts. Kehan n jaaeae – even to speak this is a blessing of the Guru and to realize that and to implement that within our life are even greater blessings.

Hukam hovai thaa niramal hovai houmai vichahu jaaeae |

Because this line is braham gyaan – eaeko sachaa sabh mehi varathai – to see that One Lord pervading through all is brahamgyaan – that is the understanding of God.
