Dhan Guru Nanak

I am humbled to be able to put forward this track called 'Dhan Guru Nanak' in conjunction with the 550th anniversary (Gurpurab) of Guru Nanak Ji. Guru Nanak Ji started it all. The whole movement of awakening during a period of intense suffering. That seed he had planted sprouted through the land through the people and now the world.

As I wrote the music of this track at first I wanted to use a shabad from Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. However there was just SO SO much to say about Guru Nanak Ji that all I could say was 'Dhan Guru Nanak, Dhan Guru Nanak' (Gratitude & Glory to Guru Nanak Ji) , and that became the main section of the track. I included a section in English as well for my English listeners that goes into abit of story telling of sorts. And to do the story telling abit better I got a colleague of mine who is an accomplished rapper to rap about how Guru Nanak came and released the masses from their imprisonment whether physical or mental. And to facilitate the story telling in the rap session, we also did up a short animation to also appeal to my younger listeners.

I know im bending the rules of Kirtan here by including rap in the mix, but the music of the world has been evolving and like how Guru Ji used the music of the locality to spread his message, we too must ready to accommodate the time today to relay the timeless message of Dhan Guru Nanak. Dhan Guru Nanak Dhan Guru Nanak. Bhul Chuk Da Maaf. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!
