Bhai Dilbagh Singh & Gulbagh Singh

Bhai Dilbagh Singh and Bhai Gulbagh Singh were renowned musicians belonging to the Rababi family of Bhai Choohad, which was blessed by Guru Har Gobind Sahib Ji when Guru Ji visited the village of Bodalan. Their father, Bhai Gaho Vaang, was a tabla master, while their maternal grandfather, Bhai Nand, was a famous singer who belonged to the Patiala Gharana of music. The brothers were initiated into music at a young age and were trained at home. They also learned from Pandit Babu Ram, a well-known harmonium player from Dasuha, Punjab. In 1974, the brothers performed Kirtan for the first time on stage in Manji Sahib, Amritsar, where they mesmerized the audience with their performance. Word of their talent soon spread all over India and abroad. In 1975, during the Kirtan Darbar in Anandpur Sahib, in conjunction with Hola Mahala, the brothers took Amrit before singing a Shabad in Raag Basant. They traveled to many countries, including Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, the UK, and the USA. Bhai Dilbagh Singh Ji passed away in October 2004, while Bhai Gulbagh Singh Ji stopped performing Kirtan due to health reasons. Currently, their younger brother, Bhai Davinder Singh Ji, is continuing the family's tradition, and one of their nephews, Ustad Satninder Singh Bodal, is taking the family name to great heights. Their music style was unique in the world of Gurmat Sangeet. Although their style was not traditional, they will be remembered not as Khayaliyas but as Kirtaniyas. They had memorized prodigious quantities of Bani and their Parmans were always rich and appropriate. Their primary musical context was Gurmat Sangeet, and they were excellent musicians who were uncompromising in their commitment to singing according to the traditions of Raga. Bhai Dilbagh Singh and Bhai Gulbagh Singh's legacy lives on in their recordings, which continue to inspire and uplift listeners. Their music style is a blend of Raag and classical music. SikhNet is proud to offer audio recordings of their Kirtan, Gurbani, and Katha - available on our website.
