Leaders and Members of Canadian Parliament crossing the party lines joined Sikhs in demanding India to abolish the death penalty. More than five thousand Sikhs from all over Canada gathered at Parliament Hill in solidarity with Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana who is on death row in India.

The Punjab Jails Department has refused to execute the order of a Chandigarh court asking the Patiala Central Jail authorities to hang Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana. On Monday, the Central Jail, Patiala authorities also returned the “black or death warrant” of the Chandigarh Court
As per media reports “Black Warrants” for the execution of Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana, who has been sentenced death penalty in former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh’s assassination case, reached Patiala Central Jail authorities on February 13, 2012 and he will be hanged in Patiala central jail at 9 am on March 31.
“The use of the death penalty undermines human dignity and any miscarriage or failure of justice in the implementation of the death penalty is irreversible and irreparable,” the memorandum said.
