The Panjab Digital Library (PDL) launched in the UK with a permanent installation at Europe's largest Gurdwara, Sri Guru Singh Sabha Southall (SGSSS), celebrating the Sovereign Sikh spirit under the leadership of Banda Singh Bahadar and the resultant Khalsa Raj.
You may never have seen the work of one of the best young Sikh artists in the world. From Ludiana comes a bright star in the firmament of Sikh art. Sharanjeet Singh's world captures a world of emotion and depth in each of his many projects. He is not only talented, but extremely prolific as well.
The dedicated team of PDL is doing a great job by preserving these treasures in the best possible way and making them available and easily accessible to anybody in the world, free of cost. There is no doubt now, that the future Punjabi generations will be richer because their heritage will not be lost.
Not long back, research meant trudging down to the library, searching for journals through musty stacks and queuing up for the photocopier. But not anymore. Digital books will play a vital role since people today are more tech-savvy and time-conscious. Taking a cue from the trend, Punjab has acquired its first digital library, providing an access to swathes of information.
The library aims to preserve the history of Punjab and the Sikhs by digitizing books, records and documents, and making them available online even after the originals cease to exist
