Thousands turned out Saturday for the 15th annual Free Coat Giveaway at the Boys & Girls Club of Tracy, sponsored by Tracy Sikh families.
"You see people leave with tears in their eyes," he said. "When you see the kids smile because they're so happy to pick out clothes, there's nothing in the world better than that."
A Sikh group in rural Tracy is looking to expand with a plan to build a 10-acre site that would accommodate a larger congregation. Representatives of the Gurdwara Gur Nakak Parkash on West Grant Line Road are scheduled to go before the San Joaquin County Planning Commission tonight to discuss the project.
Hundreds of residents braved the cold and rain Saturday morning to get a free coat for winter. The American Sikh Community spent $75,000 this year to offer more than 15,000 winter items such as coats, gloves, scarves, socks, hats and blankets.
Nearly 200 of the area's underprivileged are a little warmer today thanks to the kindness of strangers.
