SURREY'S LARGEST SIKH TEMPLE TO HONOUR CANADIAN SOLDIERS

Remembrance-Day (7K)As part of this weekend's Remembrance Day ceremonies, Surrey's largest Sikh temple will be hosting senior officers from the Canadian military and conducting a special prayer ceremony to commemorate the sacrifices of Canada's soldiers, both past and present.

The Canadian Forces contingent, which will include officials from the HMCS Algonquin and an honour guard, will enter temple grounds led by bagpipers and then make their way inside to the temple sanctum. Senior temple officials will then present a plaque and ceremonial scarf to the officers.

"We are very honoured to participate in this remembrance ceremony," said Lt(N) Arthur Halpenny, the ship's officer representing HMCS Algonquin at the ceremony.

"This is an excellent opportunity for members of our ship's company to join hands with the Sikh community to commemorate the loss of our fallen sailors, soldiers and air personnel."

The event, which is organised by Harbinder Singh Sewak, publisher of The Post Group of newspapers, marks its 2nd consecutive year.

Last year, Honourary Colonel Steven Millen of the 442 Squadron was presented with a ceremonial sword by temple president Gian Singh Gill. The congregation also donated $2,500 to the Canadian military.

Sikhs have a long cultural tradition of participation in the military. Over 65,000 Sikhs fought for the British Army in WWI and over 300,000 Sikhs fought against the Germans and Japanese in WWII.

The event takes place Saturday, Novermber 12, from 9AM to 12 noon at Dasmesh Darbar Gurudwara, 12885 - 85 Avenue. The public is welcome to attend
