Sep. 4, 2010: CHANDIGARH - The general elections of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandak Committee(SGPC) expected to be held by the end of 2010 have been further delayed and likely to beld in March 2011. The Chief Commissioner of Gurdwara elections Harphool Singh Brar attributed the delay in election to floods in parts of Punjab and Haryana. He said that state governments of Punjab and Haryana couldn’t complete the registration of electoral rolls even though the last date of enrolment of voters ended on August 14. He said that the final electoral rolls now will be published on January 17, 2011.

He also stated, “The Punjab and Haryana governments do not have enough personnel to complete the work in the stipulated time so we extended the deadline to Jan 17, 2011. The date of election will be announced after final publication of electoral rolls.

Brar said any objection on the registrared voters can be lodged before the concerned deputy commissioner from October 1 to 28 and scuitiny will be done of October 29 to November 30.

Brar said that in the last general elections the number of voters in Punjab was 50,54,617 which has increased to 52,36,475. In Haryana, the number of voters has increased to 3,07,236 while in 2004 there were 2,86,707 voters. The number of voters has declined in Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh. In Himachal only 7200 voters are registered as compared to 15,407 in 2004. In Chandigarh, there are 11,985 voters while in 2004 there were 14,507 voters in this union territory.”

In reply to a question, Brare said that issuing voter I cards to voters for SGPC poll was not possible beacause Punjab and Haryana governments were not ready to bear the expenses.

SGPC elections are held after every five years. The term of present house was expired in 2009 but elections coulnd’t be held due to various reasons. The elections to the SGPC are conducted by the Gurdwara Election Commission as per the Sikh Gurdwara Act, 1925.

The present SGPC has 170 elected members â?? 120 from the general category, 30 seats reserved for women and 20 for Scheduled Castes candidates. Another 15 members are nominated by the SGPC itself with the head priest of Darbar Sahib in Amritsar and the heads of the five Takhts also being its members.
