Sep 2nd 2011: A positive attitude helps, too.

Most people who successfully complete a marathon get asked lots of questions by non-runners. How did you do it? What kind of training did you complete? What were the secrets of your success?

For Fauja Singh, these questions are especially important.

Why?

At 100 years of age, Singh is the world’s oldest marathoner. Since he turned 89, he’s completed seven marathons. He has signed up for the 2012 Edinburgh Marathon.

So what are his secrets?

Ginger curry and copious amounts of tea, he says. Attitude counts–so do the 10 miles he logs daily.

“I am not a learned person in any shape or form. To me, the secret is being happy, doing charity work, staying healthy and being positive,’ he said. “If someone says I must stop running I ignore them – invariably they’re younger than me. The secret to a long and healthy life is to be stress-free. If there’s something you can’t change then why worry about it? Be grateful for everything you have, stay away from people who are negative, stay smiling and keep running.”
