AMRITSAR: The Dal Khalsa called today for cutting the bureaucrat flab, said the Punjab government decision to have seven officers in the rank of Director general of Police would put further burden on the taxpayers in the state.
Party President H.S Dhami and political affairs secretary Kanwarpal Singh said the Chelliah committee set up by the state government in nineties had recommended drastic reduction in police and civil administration which had proliferated under the garb of dealing with militancy in the state. However, every successive government had failed to reign in officialdom.
They said the state government was running on borrowed money, the heavy debt which is to be paid by the people. Rather than opting for fiscal prudence, the Badal government was allegedly squandering people’s money to reward their loyalists in the police force. This very first decision of the Badal government was anti-people, they said. Moreover, by having 7 DGP's, the Government has given the impression that "Punjab is a police state."
“The long period of Governor’s rule wrecked and thoroughly corrupted the administration. No political party has dared bring back the system on rails. Corruption, nepotism and bureaucratic lethargy have to go if the state has to move forward.”
Taking a jibe at the Akali led government for promoting 3 IPS as DGP’s to accommodate their blue-eyed boy Sumedh Singh Saini, they said the Badals have thrown all norms and ethics to wind by appointing the alleged “ruthless cop with tainted past" as head of the Punjab Police.
They were of the view that the present day Akali government had superseded four officers to hand over the reins of police force in Saini’s hands “only to pay back for his loyalty towards the House of Badals”. “Even as it is the prerogative of the chief minister to handpick the officer to run the affairs of police department, his choice should not be based on personal considerations”.
They said Saini patronized the likes of infamous nihang Ajit Singh Phoola for targeting not only militants and their family members but also his opponents through illegal and extra-judicial operations. "He was also said to have engineered the cold blooded murder of four innocent members including 5 year old polio-stricken nephew of Babbar Khalsa militant Balwinder Singh Jattana", they alleged.
