Tragic memory of 'Operation Blue Star' (OP-ED)

News Source: thepost.com.pk

June 5 and June 6 are reminders of the 'Operation Blue Star' when Indian military, led by General Kuldip Singh Brar, launched attack on the Golden Temple, the holiest shrine of Sikhs in 1984, to arrest Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, the only leader who had been boldly fighting for the rights of Sikhs. The Indian Army supported by troops and armoured vehicles broke all records of the state terrorism and extra-judicial killings through that barbaric operation.

It is notable that at that time, there were only 251 Sikhs inside the complex to protect the Golden Temple, resisting well-trained Indian army, equipped with sophisticated weaponry. In those days, majority of the Sikhs were coming to Golden Temple to celebrate Martyr Day of Guru Arjan Dev Ji.

Then the Indian regime used tanks and destroyed the Akaal Takhat Sahib, which is right in front of the Golden Temple. On June 6, when all Sikh fighters were martyred along with Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, Indian troops entered the temple with their shoes by even deliberately ignoring the holiness of the place, showing utter indecency. When the Indian Army felt that only 251 men had prevented them from entering the temple for so many days, they started killing innocent Sikhs who had come there to visit the Temple. The only purpose was to hide their humiliation.

In connection with that incident of state terrorism, Ramnarain Kumar and George Sieberer in their book, The Sikh struggle, write: "The army killed every Sikh who could be found inside the temple complex. They were hauled out of rooms, brought to corridors on the circumference of the temple and with their hands tied behind their back, were shot in cold blood. Among the victims were many old men, women and children." However, all visitors were locked up in rooms for two days without any food, water, or electricity and were starved to death. Besides, the Golden Temple remained under the army control for many months.

The brutality of the 'Operation Blue Star' was not confined to the Golden Temple. Indian armed forces simultaneously attacked 40 other historical gurdwaras all over East Punjab. When Sikhs in other states came to know about the desecration of the Golden Temple and massacre of their brethren, they quickly left for Punjab. New Delhi turned its attention to Sikh military and tried to stop them before they could reach Punjab. Many Sikhs were assassinated on the way and many others were arrested.

According to an estimate, about 50,000 Sikhs were killed within a few days. The whole Amritsar city was sealed and was burnt. A number of tourists either were murdered or arrested. Shops belonging to Sikhs were looted and their houses were set ablaze by Hindu mobs. In most of the cases, Sikh women were molested and some persons of their community were also burnt alive.

Another tragic dimension of the military operation is that historical Sikh artifacts — all the literature written by the gurus was taken away by the army and was also set ablaze. In this regard, New Delhi claimed that it was burnt while bombing the Temple.

In November of the same year, two dedicated Sikhs named Beant Singh and Satwant Singh who were posted at Premier Indira Gandhi's residence in New Delhi, assassinated her. Then Hindu riots erupted in the capital and other cities in which more then 15,000 Sikhs were killed in broad daylight by the supporters of Indira Gandhi while police watched silently so as to provide the Hindus with free hand to massacre Sikhs. The attack on the Golden Temple and genocide of Sikhs only accelerated the liberation movement for Khalistan as Bhindrenwale became a folk hero.

Meanwhile, after 'Operation Blue Star' and the Sikh genocide, Sikhs' struggle for independence continued, but the Indian government made every effort to crush the same with the state machinery. To maintain their control over the Golden Temple, another attack was launched on the Temple in 1987, called 'Operation Black Thunder'. This time only Sikh resistance was the main target. In that respect, quite a number of people of their community were killed and dead bodies lay inside the sacred place for many days. According to a report, many trucks were loaded with dead bodies and all were burned with kerosene oil. Afterwards, 'Operation Woodrose' and 'Operation Black Thunder-II' were conducted against the Sikh community, which also assassinated them extra-judicially.

After these barbaric operations, Sikhs organised themselves into an armed power in order to fight the Indian state terrorism. Many Sikhs left India to escape religious persecution. Sikhs have spread out all over the world to keep the movement of Khalistan alive. In this connection, their struggle is still going on.

A renowned scholar, Dr. Sangat Singh remarks in his book, The Sikhs in history, "The Indian government has killed over 1 million to 1.2 million Sikhs. During last 18 years Indian government has also killed 50,000 Christians and 100,000 Muslims since 1947. The only way to stop this state terrorism is to create a Khalistan state, where Sikhs and other religious people can enjoy their freedom".

It is of particular attention that the Indian government dominated by politicians from the Hindi heartland uses force ruthlessly against any move to free Assam, Kashmir, Khalistan, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tamil Nadu and Tripura.

Consequently, 'Operation Blue Star' was one of the most inflammatory actions ever taken by the Indian government. Still, coupled with intermittent massacre of Muslims, Christians, including that of the lower caste communities tends to expose the real face of New Delhi. Ground realities display that India is a fundamentalist state under the mask of secularism. And the tragedy of 'Operation Blue Star' and its drastic aftermath has, without any doubt, endorsed this fact.

Issue of Khalistan with western Sikh Youth

Why I think it is a distraction is that it is not an issue that unifies or teaches the basic principles of Sikh Dharma. Of those kids who wore the Khalistan t-shirts, only 1 kept his hair and wore a turban. How can they be qualified to answer questions about Sikhi? The gyan comes from living a Dharmic life, not by sloganeering. It's pretty easy to rile up dis-enfranchised youth. They are not financially dis-enfranchised, but culturally. They can't relate to their parents, who don't live a GurSikh lifestyle and they can't be accepted by a fair amount of Westerners. Therefore their sense of belonging and angst for being marginalized is ripe for the picking, and when the issue of Khalistan is presented it plays on every emotion necessary to recruit and stir up trouble and controversy. How can somebody who wasn't even born yet really understand the issue that well? I've met and interviewed many people who were there during that time. I've met a few leaders of organizations on certain lists in Canada and the US, and I couldn't believe they called themselves Sikhs, or people working for the panth. I thought their beliefs and practices were more aligned with fear tactics and control and bullying and narrow-mindedness - what some call terrorism. Why when you type "Sikh" into Youtube are the majority of the videos featuring AK-47's? Isn't that such a disgrace to the divine memory of our Guru? GOI were the culprits, no doubt about it, but certainly Bhindranwale did not have to be inside the Akal Takht. It was a tragic time and there were mistakes made by Sikhs as well. We should always remember the martyrdom of the Akal Takht and remember how all martyrs in our history have made us stronger and more resolute. How the strength to sacrifice came from devotion, from God-given sovereignty, an infinite sovereignty without borders. Can the GOI give us a RAJ? Can a piece of land be equated to Khalsa Raj? Can Khalistan t-shirts replace our Kaysh and rehit maryada? Can anger and division remind us of Ek Ong Kaar? Can Khalistan make me happier than reading Japji in the Amrit Vaylaa? Can it bring justice to the whole world? We are a free people, regardless of what India does. Khalsa Raj is a manifestation of our God-given sovereignty. The freedom of spirit and mind with which we are all imbued. Guru Nanak said "man jeetay jag jeet." He told us that conquering our mind will give us victory over the whole world. Conquering a Khalistan won't do that. With due respect to all those who hold Khalistan to the ideal of Khalsa Raj, I pray that you may someday expand your vision and realize that Khalsa belongs to God not to Punjab, India, or Khalistan. WaheGuru Ji Ka Khalsa, WaheGuru Ji Ki Fateh!

Lets become part of the Solution

Before this turns into a bashing of Sant Jarnail Singh Ji, I’d like to stop it here because it will take away from the REAL message that the article is trying to give. Call me a Bhinrawale supporter Khalistani or whatever you like for that matter. Anytime the issue of the events of 1984 is brought up we start to first bash the idea of Khalistan then we move on to Bhinrawale and finally the corrupt politicians. I see no point in doing so in my opinion. We should instead use our energy towards finding a solution before history repeats itself again. Keeping this in mind I feel the need to clarify a few points: 1) Sant Jarnail Singh upon becoming Jathedar of Damdami Taksal continued the fight for equal rights, which of previous Jathedar Sant Kartar Singh Ji had been doing. Not only did Sant Ji travel all over India preaching Sikhi but raised awareness of issues that were becoming a concern for the panth. 2) There was no fight to separate from India, please educate yourselves by reading the Anandpur Sahib resolution – further more after the attack on Harimander Sahib, the Sikh Nation was very hurt from the attacks and declared to have Khalistan as the “only” solution and some people are still stuck in the phase. Sant Ji never asked for Khalistan as a solution but he did say that there were people who were working towards it, and stated that if the government gives us raj we will take it if not it’s not a problem because equal rights is the issue. 3) If Sant Jarnail Singh Ji was the intended target why were various Gurdwaras attacked the same day? Many times Sant Ji said if the police wanted to arrest him they can with no problem. On one occasion they did arrest him the government could not a build a case against him and he was released. So if he was a threat why did they not charge him with a crime? 4) Let’s look back in history when Aurangzeb was the ruler of India he did not first did not try to convert Hindus from Delhi or surrounding areas he started forcefully converting them from their main site which was in Kashmir think of about it!– this was a attack on Sikhism by attacking Amritsar. 5) And finally don’t get me started on why did the Sikh bring arms in to Harimander Sahib and why couldn’t they fight in the mountains somewhere. During the time of Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, Guru Sahib had built his throne higher than the King of India. Once on the Takhat Guru Ji told the Sikh Nation to donate arms and horses so would you call Guru Sahib a terrorist for doing so at Harimander Sahib? If there was a message to be heard it had to be heard from the Sikh Parliament Akal Takhat Sahib. By blaming the problems on Sant Jarnail Singh or anyone else for that matter will not solve anything Singh Sahib Yogi Ji met Sant Ji various time. Upon meeting him Sant Ji said always said lets work towards making good Sikhs. By saying the western youth is “distracted” when it comes to Khalistan hold truth but at the same time doesn’t. The events of 1984 have been engaged a lot of Sikh youth into Sikhi whether they were born during that time or not, for example when the story of Sikh youth in BC wearing t shirts with Khalistan written on them became an issue for them at school. Youth that never had even thought of coming into Sikhi from that high school wanted to learn more all a sudden. The t shirt episode inspired 40 youth to approach the guys who were wearing t shirts to teach them about Sikhi (how do I know because of live there). Anyway at the end of the day what I’m trying to say is educate yourselves and become Khalsay before Khalsa Raj. We need to use different avenues to engage the youth in active dialogue instead of just complaining all the time about the problem and not becoming part of the solution. Guru Sahib showed us many ways to solve issues by engaging in the battle field and by using words. We need to end battles with each other and educate ourselves and others instead of being stuck in our ego and just going in circles.

Not about hate, politics but

Vaheguruji Ka Khalsa, Vaheguruji Ki Fateh, about cruelty against our very own fellow innocent sikhs, some of whose souls are still around 24 years later in their home, children of deceased still suffering because they are unable to wipe off the memory of the pain of seeing their parents, grandparents, etc killed before their very young eyes and it is easy for us to say move on and not look back at past (my exact words to fellow sikhs before I went to India years in 1990 and witnessed killing of sikh by HINDU NOT SIKH police) cause we are not directly affected by such tragedy. How is demanding justice against the inhumane crimes committed and an independent state for Sikhs to be free as Americans (that you yourself mention the Indian govt promised partial autonomy to Sikhs) to cause repercussions to our great Darbar Sahibji? Are you suggesting we fear those who have committed murders against the innocent so they can do so again do so in the future because they are still serving in the Indian govt. and no one cares to bring them to justice?? sk

Stopping the war in Afganistan and Iraq

Surely their are to many deaths that are unjust with the so called war on terror. Many innocent children, women and men are dying and are being polluted with chemicals in the air that is causing children being born with defects. As Sikhs, we are human rights protectors as our gurus who showed us how we should react at times of unjust rules, we should be getting together and announce as a population that this war is unjust and to stop this suffering by many innocent people who do not deserve to die or be maimed for no apparent reason. Please write to your local MP or even discussions amonst peers and raising awareness is highly benefical in order to stop this unwarranted war.

Pakistani propaganda

What can you expect coming from Pakistan. Fools are those Sikhs who follow these hate mongers. The whole mess in India is created by Corruption, whether they are Hindus, Muslims, Christians or Sikhs. Look at Punjab government and police. Most of them are Corrupt Sikhs. If they wanted to do a good for Punjab. Don't you think they would have done it by now. Bhindranwala, I don't want to call him Sant and insult all the true Sants, did more bad for Punjab then good. Any one surrounded by body guards and AK47s can talk the talk, but when it came to doing things who can go beyond what my beloved Guru Gobind Singh ji did. I salute Guru Gobind Singh ji a thousand times for all of his greatness and Sikhi he gave to the Sikh panth. Today's sikhs, even the members of the SGPC, Badal, Amarinder and all of the Sikh leaders have done nothing but filled their pockets. If you want evidence look no further than that Punjab used to be number 1 state in India, now it is at number 8. Also before Bhindranwala how many farmers have you heard of committing suicide.

operation blue star

vaheguru ji ka khalsa vaheguru ji ki fateh i

tragic memory of operation blue star.

the account garbles events and is factually incorrect in many respects.it fails to point out many underpinnings in the situation and weakens the sikh version of events and causes.there was no fight for khalistan except some slogan -mongering by frustrated elements.dr sangat singh has nowhere pleaded for khalistan in his book' sikhs in history'.sikhs have to be careful about agents provocateurs.

Need Information

Hello Sir, Sardar Jagar Singh ji, I need to understand the views of Sikh scholars on modern Sikh history. If you are from Delhi, Please tell me from where(internet/library/shops) can I get these(‘sikhs in history') types of books in Delhi. Thanks & Regards, Kamaljit Singh Khalsa

playing politics

This article deserves credit for accurately portraying the degree to which the GOI has caused harm to Sikhs and other religious minorities. However, like many western Sikh youth (unfortunately), including those who weren't even born yet, this article paints "Hindus" as the enemy rather than tyrants. The tyrants may have been Hindu, but some weren't, the enemy are the unrighteous deeds, not people of other religions. This article uses the tragedy to forward it's anti-India, anti-Hindu diatribe, which is more political maneuvering at the expense of the real victims. Furthermore Khalistan is not the "only" solution, it can hardly even be considered the best solution. It's a distraction and the political maneuvering of a few tyrants masked as Sikhs who are stirring up trouble with the western Sikh youth. We would be much more powerful if we concentrated on Naam instead of Khalistan, and live as Khalsa and work for Khalsa Raj rather than yell slogans about Khalistan and hate people from other religions. May the victims find peace and may we as Sikhs help them rather than get distracted by political power plays.

Government of India and Sikh Safety

Sat Hari Singh Khalsa New york City The blaming of Hindus for the massacre at the Golden Temple may not be quite correct but it is the policy of peoples to place blame in such a way, especially in the light of the fact that the Indian government has shown little sign of repentance and those who conducted the atrocities get appointed again and again by the Indian state. The Germans are blamed for the Jewish holocaust of WW2, as almost no Germans stood up to their government’s genocidal policies. The policy of the Government of India [GOI] to date has not brought to justice those who took part in murders, rapes and torture. In point of fact they deny such reports are true in spite of the fact that the accusations have come from not only Sikhs but from Amnesty International and other such civil rights groups. The congress of the USA also condemned the attacks. The concept of Khalistan comes from the reality that no people should have to suffer state genocide and be expected to give loyalty to that state. When people are killed by state power they have a right to fight to be separated from that state and construct their own state power to protect them from such abuses. This is what happened with the Jewish people who constructed the state of Israel as a refuge from state genocide. Likewise the Irish who lost half their population in a famine while the English state stood by and did nothing took these actions as the last straw and fought for an independent Irish Republic. Many peoples have demanded separate states because of the abuse of state power. What happened when the USSR fell is a recent example. It is a mute point whether the Sikhs are the same people as Hindus when the state comprised overwhelmingly of Hindus kills your co-religionists and destroys what is sacred to destroy what you are. The Indian state created the need for Khalistan. Khalistan is not a dharmic issue as Sikhism does not call for a Sikh state. But it may be a survival issue and it may well be the only solution, to end the tyranny of genocide. Ending tyranny is a Sikh teaching and in that way Khalistan may well be necessary. To refuse to fight tyranny is to cooperate with it, something no Sikh can agree with.
