Local Sikhs feed the homeless

During the Christmas season, many people donate their time and money to the needy. The food bank flourishes and for a few days in December, the homeless go to bed with a full stomach.
However, at other times of the year more people need to help out and give to those less fortunate.
The Sikh community, in keeping with the tradition of Guru Nanak, is holding Guru Nanak Free Kitchen for the homeless on Oct. 2 and Oct. 3, and from Nov. 10 to Nov. 15 at the Life Skills Center, 412 E. Cordova St. This is a collective effort by the entire Sikh community and everyone is welcome to participate to help make a difference to those in need.
The Guru Nanak’s Free Kitchen concept, developed in the summer of 2007 by a group of like-minded individuals, was a six-day program that attracted hundreds of volunteers and made a real difference that week to those in need.
To make the kitchens a success, please volunteer or donate food, drink and clothing items. Food items needed include: Dall (Raj Mah, Masoor and chick peas), Basmati rice, juice powder (Superstore no name brand of fruit punch), eggless cookies and milk (need 60 per day; can be dropped off at Gurdwara Sahib Sukh Sagar, New Westminster, a few days before each event).
Clothing items needed: socks, shoes, gloves, jackets and blankets (can be dropped off in a box in Langar Hall of Gurdwara Sahib Sukh Sagar, New Westminster).
For the Free Kitchen on Oct. 2 and Oct. 3 and Nov. 10 to Nov. 15, cooking will take place at Gurdwara Sukh Sagar from 4 a.m. to 6 a.m.
