This Year, SikhNet is handing the Judging over to the Sangat.

Have you ever watched The X Factor? In the beginning episodes, the judges filter out the acts, and later on, the audience decides. Anyone watching can vote for their favorite act. This years festival will be decided in the same way, first SikhNet judges will preselect the finalists, then the Sangat will vote for the actual winners. Let us see what happens with the Sangat deciding! Here’s how it works:

1. Preselection:

The SikhNet judges have received 29 films and reviewed them based on the following:

  • Creativity & Originality
  • Ability to Deliver a Message
  • Technical Execution
  • Overall Impact

To qualify, the films also had to be consistent with this year’s theme (onKAUR), as well as follow all of the rules and guidelines. The judges have selected a list of 18 finalists; 9 in each category. The finalist will be announced on September 25, 2013.  Also on that day all the films (including non-finalists) will become viewable.

2. Voting:

You will need a Facebook account to vote. If you don’t have one, create one now. The Sangat will vote for the following categories:

  • Intermediate documentary (Make Me Think)
  • Intermediate drama (Make Me Cry)

 

* These categorizations are flexible. We left the category of the film up to the directors for the most part. That means, if a director wanted her/his film to compete in the ‘Cry’ category we tried to honor that. Not all films in the ‘Cry’ category are dramas, and not all films in the ‘Think’ category are literal documentaries.

The Senior and Junior film winners have been decided by the SikhNet Judges. These winners will be announced with all other winners.

Voting starts September 25, 2013…  Stay tuned, and tell your friends to vote!

Voting finishes on October 9, 2013… The Sangat will have about 2 weeks to vote.

That’s because we want you to watch all the films in each category before voting on that category, and you need time to do that. We encourage all voters to create 2 ‘MOVIE NIGHTS‘. Invite your friends over and watch all the films in 1 category per night. You only need 2 nights to do this, and you can do it in 2 weekends.

  • The drama finalist videos are about 2.25 hours of film time
  • The documentary finalist videos are about 1.25 hours film time

3. Winners:

  • Winners will be announced on October 14, 2013
  • The Sangat’s favorites will receive their various prizes

 

PRIZES

Junior – Age 11-17

Best Film– $500

Intermediate – Age 18-28

Drama – Does it make me cry? – $1,000
Comedy – Does it make me laugh?  – $1,000
Documentary – Does it make me think?  – $1,000


Senior – 29 and up

Best Film – certificate

+ non-cash awards may be given for categories like: best production, best original music, etc. as the judges see fit.
