SEBASTIAN, Fla. (CBS12) — The first Sikh police officer in the State of Florida is remembering fallen Texas deputy Sandeep Dhaliwal as a trailblazer and mentor.

Dhaliwal was the first observant Sikh officer in Harris County, Texas, the county where Houston is located.

“We lost a valuable pillar in the Sikh community," Officer Tegpreet Singh said. "I don’t know who else he could have influenced, how many kids in the nation, around the world [he could have helped]."

Officer Singh and a number of police officers from the Sikh Officers Association plan to travel to Texas on Tuesday to participate in a religious service and police memorial for Dhaliwal...

...On Friday, when news broke of a deputy shot in Houston, Singh immediately texted his friend and mentor, asking if he was alright. Dhaliwal never responded. He was shot during a traffic stop and was pronounced dead later in a Houston hospital.

Singh said it's now up to him and the Sikh officers around the nation to honor Deputy Dhaliwal’s legacy and mentor others.

“We’ve got to set the line for some of these guys,” he said. “Don’t let anything stop you.”
