Sikhs around the world are marking the anniversary of the birth of the founder of their religion, Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
He preached equality and an end to the caste system in the 16th century, hundreds of years before equality was embraced by opponents of slavery in the West.
And his birthday has been recognized by the prime minister and the premier of B.C.
“Guru Nanak Dev Ji fought against discrimination and prejudice, and preached a message of ‘equality for all,’ regardless of religion, background, or gender," noted Justin Trudeau in a statement. “His teachings of unity and openness are just as relevant today. They remind us that diversity is a strength, and that all of us have a role to play to make our world more just and inclusive.
“Today, Sikh Canadians continue to honour and uphold these important values, and their contributions help make Canada a stronger country and a better place.
