Guru piaaree Sadhsangat jeeo, hukamnama sahib today has some historical context within the Sikh faith. When Sathiguru Arjan Devjee Maharaj was bestowed the blessing of Guruship by Siri Guru Raamdaas jee Maharaj, Sathiguru Arjan Devjee Maharaj jee's older brother Baba Prithi Chand jee was very upset, he was very envious, was very jealous. Ever since that day Baba Prithi Chand jee tried many times to get the sangat, the congregation to follow him rather than Siri Guru Arjan Devjee Maharaj. Baba Prithi Chand jee was always looking for ways, always looking for methods of getting Guru Arjan Devjee out of the way and installing himself as the next Guru instead of Guru Arjan Devjee Maharaj. In Sikh history we find mentions that Baba Prithi Chand jee would misleed the sangat, send people out to convince the sangat that he was the Guru, many different things Baba Prithi Chand jee tried.

When Siri Guru Hargobind Singhjee Patshah - our beloved sixth Guru - were born, in the Sikh context we say that Guru Sahibjee ne avataar thariayaa - that they came upon this earth because the Guru is beyond birth and death, you must remember that and learn that Guru Sahibjee ne avataar dhaariaya - Guru Sahibjee came upon this earth, sixth Guru Guru Hargobind Sahib Patshahjee. From this point onwards Baba Prithi Chand jee tried even more, tried harder to get Siri Guru Arjan Dev Sahibjee's family out of the way so that he could install himself or his son as the Guru. Baba Prithi Chand jee poisoned Guru Hargobind Sahib Patshahjee when they were a child, he sent a nurse and then he sent a servant of the Guru's household, they both tried to poison Guru Sahibjee but they couldn't poison Guru Sahibjee. He sent a snake charmer with a cobra to get the snake to bite Siri Guru Hargobind Sahibjee Maharaj but Guru Hargobind Sahibjee Maharaj wasn't affected in anyway and none of these things could touch Siri Guru Hargobind Sahibjee Maharaj.

It is said that Baba Prithi Chand jee decided to get the help of a soldier by the name of Sulehee Khan. Baba Prithi Chand jee said to Sulehee Khan that do what it takes but just get rid of Guru Arjan Devjee and His family. So it is said that Sulehee Khan left towards Siri Amritsar Sahib and was in the preparation of attacking Siri Amritsar Sahib . When the sangat of Siri Amritsar Sahib found out about this they came to Siri Guru Arjan Devjee Maharaj and asked Guru Arjan Devjee Maharaj and this shabad is on Ang 371 of Siri Guru Granth Sahibjee Maharaj,

Prathamae mathaa j pathree chalaavo |
Some of the sangat said that please send a letter to try and stop the attacker Sulehee Khan. Some of the sangat said,

Dhutheeeae mathaa dhue maanukh pahuchaavo |
Some of the sangat said that send some people to talk to Sulehee Khan and persuade him to not attack Siri Guru Arjan Devjee Maharaj.

Thritheeeae mathaa kish karo oupaaeiaa |
Some other people said that let's do something here, lets prepare for the attack. But Guru Arjan Devjee said,

Mai sabh kish shodd prabh thuhee dhiaaeiaa |1|
I've given up everything Waheguru and have just meditated upon You, O Waheguru!
It was also at this time that Sikh history tells us that Guru Arjan Devjee sang another Shabad as well, on Ang 201 of Siri Guru Granth Sahibjee Maharaj:

Thir ghar baisahu har jan piaarae | sathigur thumarae kaaj savaarae |1| rehaao |
Sathiguru Arjan Devjee said to the sangat, said to the congregation in Amritsar Sahib, remain steady! Sathigur thumarae kaaj savaarae |1| rehaao | - Sathiguru Guru Ramdaasjee Maharaj will resolve all our affairs.

Dhusatt dhooth paramaesar maarae | jan kee paij rakhee karathaarae |1|
Lord God Waheguru will strike down the evil and the wicked. That Creator Waheguru will preserve the honor of His servants. So that shabad was said to the be sung by the Guru at this time as well. Guru told the sangat that nothing will happen, sit down and meditate upon Siri Guru Raamdasjee Maharaj, upon Waheguru, nothing will touch you. Even to this day in Siri Amritsar Sahib after aarti is sung this shabad is sung in the evening, thir ghar baisahu har jan piaarae - is sung till this day!

Gurmukh piaareyo Guru Arjan Devjee Maharaj was sitting in the sangat, and telling the

sangat: meditate upon God, God will preserve us, will look after us, will look after Amritsar and what happened? When Sulehee Khan left to see that Baba Prithi Chand jee had big ovens made where they would make bricks and other things and Baba Prithi Chand jee decided to show Sulehee Khan these things. What happened? As Sulehee Khan was, some say walking along, some say riding along and looking at these ovens, he fell into one of these ovens. In his hands he was holding an axe and as he fell into these ovens that axe came in his hand and it came at such an angle that it cut off his head and he fell into the oven and he was burnt to death. When the news came to Siri Amritsar Sahib that Sulehee Khan had been stopped mid way then Siri Guru Arjan Devjee Maharaj sang this shabad that,

Sulehee thae naaraaein raakh |
Naaraaein - Waheguru, raakh - saved me, saved us from Sulehee Khan. Whilst we are going through this historical interpretation of this shabad there is a *spiritual interpretation as well*. Sulehee meaning thorns, that wisdom which is a thorn inside me naaraaein raakh - only God can save me from that spiritual ignorance, the ignorance of Waheguru jee, the ignorance of the Guru's math, guru's wisdom. That thorn which is within me only Gurujee can save me from that.

Sulehee kaa haath kehee n pahuchai sulehee hoe mooaa naapaak |1| rehaao |
Haath - the hands of Sulehee Khan didn't go anywhere, all the plots and plans failed. Suleehee Khan died naapaak - meaning in an impure way. In the Islamic religion it is considered very bad to burn to death - that's how Sulehee Khan died, Rehaao - pause and think about this today. *Sulehee kaa kaath kehee n pahuchai - the hands of spiritual ignorance, what are the hands? - doubts, desires - these hands they cannot touch me, they cannot touch me now! Sulehee hoe mooaa naapaak - all of the impurities, those impurities inside me, all of that spiritual ignorance has died, Waheguru jee has saved me from it. Remember we are looking at the historical meanings and the spiritual meanings as well.

Kaat kuthaar khasam sir kaattiaa khin mehi hoe gaeiaa hai khaak |
Kuthaar means an axe, kaat means to take it out, raising that axe - now if you remember the story Sulehee Khan's head was cut off with his own axe - khasam sir kaattiaa - Wahegurujee cut off His head. Khin mehi hoe gaeiaa hai khaak - in a second, in an instant he became khaak - he became dust. Spiritually what does this mean? Kaat kuthaar khasam sir kaattiaa - my khasam Lord Waheguru gave me the axe of spiritual wisdom and that cut off the head of my ego, sir kaattiaa and khin mehi hoe gaeiaa hai khaak - all of that ego melted away and I became the dust of everyone's feet.

Mandhaa chithavath chithavath pachiaa jin rachiaa thin dheenaa dhaak |1|
Sulehee Khan was chitavath chithavath mandhaa - meaning to plot and plan evil of Amritsar Sahib, but he was destroyed! Jin rachiaa - that Waheguru who created him He is one who pushed him over the edge into the oven. On a spiritual level what Guru Arjan Devjee is saying that mandhaa chithavath chithavath pachiaa - those bad thoughts which were arising from spiritual ignorance they've been pachiaa - they've been destroyed with the Guru's Grace. Jin rachiaa - that Waheguru who created me thin dheenaa dhaak - He is the One who has pushed this spiritual ignorance outside of me.

Puthr meeth dhan kishoo n rehiou s shodd gaeiaa sabh bhaaee saak |
Sahtiguru Patshah jee says nothing has remained of Sulehee Khan now, puthr meeth dhan kishoo n rehiou - sons, friends, wealth; everything is gone, nothing has remained! S shodd gaeiaa - he has left everything he owned. What has he left behind? Sabh bhaaee saak - he has left all his brothers and relatives, he has left them all behind. On a spiritual level, puthr meeth dhan kishoo n rehiou - the sons of spiritual ignorance - doubts, the meeth; friends of spiritual ignorance - desires, ego, hatred, dhan - the wealth of spiritual ignorance, all of these things kishoo n rehiou - all of these things have been removed. S Shodd gaiaa - spiritual ignorance has left me, sabh bhaaee saak - and all of his relatives of hatred, ego, envy and jealousy - all of these have left me.

Kahu naanak this prabh balihaaree jin jan kaa keeno pooran vaak |2|18|104|
Sathiguru Arjan Sahibjee says that I am a sacrifice, this prabh balihaaree who jan kaa keeno pooran vaak - who fulfilled the words of His humble servant. Guru Arjan Devjee had told the sangat of Siri Amritsar Sahib not to worry and that Waheguru will resolve all the affairs and Waheguru jee did resolve all the affairs. They fulfilled the words of Siri Guru Arjan Devjee Maharaj and Guru Arjan Devjee Maharaj is thanking God. On a spiritual level kahu naanak this prabh balihaaree - Guru Arjan Devjee says that I am a sacrifice to that Waheguru jin jan kaa keeno pooran vaak - who fulfilled the words of the Guru and removed spiritual ignorance from within me.
So this shabad we can look at from a historical level and a spiritual level as well. May Guru Arjan Dejvee bless us so that enemy within us of spiritual ignorance can be removed from within us with the grace of the Guru, with the grace of Waheguru.

Puthr meeth dhan kishoo n rehiou s shodd gaeiaa sabh bhaaee saak |
Kahu naanak this prabh balihaaree jin jan kaa keeno pooran vaak |2|18|104|
