English Hukamnama Katha - Ang 616

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh. Hukamnama today is in Raag Sorath by Guru Arjan Dev Ji on Ang 616 of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

Soraṯẖ mėhlā 5. ||
Dhan Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji Maharaj, Sachey Paadshah begins this Shabad in Sorath Raag.

Mā▫i▫ā moh magan anḏẖi▫ārai ḏevanhār na jānai||
Maharaj Ji says Mā▫i▫ā moh magan anḏẖi▫ārai ḏevanhār na jānai - magan - means in this case – to be intoxicated. What is the person intoxicated with? With moh - with attachment. Attached to what? Attached to maa-i-aa, and if we ask what maa-i-aa is. A very simple way maa-i-aa has been described; is that which seems to be but it is not. That it seems that it exists but which does not really. It is like an oasis in the desert or like kingdoms in the clouds. Or like a shadow which falls from a tree, it would not remain forever. It seems like it exists but in reality, it does not. You are infatuated, attached with something but in reality, it is not real. That is the intoxication, and what is that intoxication do. Dhan Guru Arjan Dev Ji Maharaj says andhiarai - it is darkness. So, in this intoxication, in this darkness what do you do? ḏevanhār na jānai - You do not know, you do not realize who is the giver, Akaal Purakh Waheguru.

Jī▫o pind sāj jin racẖi▫ā bal apuno kar mānai. ||1|| /span>
jio pind saaj jin rachiaa; jin rachiaa - the one who created; saaj jin - fashioned what; jio pind - your mind, your conscience, your memory; your sense of eye; and pind - your body; the one who created, who fashioned these; Akal Purakh Waheguru; bal apuno kar mānai -you believe - mania; your own - apuno kar; bal - you’re your own power. It is like the fan, believing it can work without electricity, to give you a very small example, the fan is to say, it’s me, its I, it’s my blades which are moving around. Just because you cannot see the electricity, it does not mean its not there. In the same way, you are saying you are powerful, you are working with borrowed power.

Man mūṛe ḏekẖ rahi▫o parabẖ su▫āmī||
Maharaj says man mure - O my foolish mind; dekh rahio - somebody is watching; who is watching? parabh - my Lord, my suaami, my master, Akal Purakh, Waheguru. The one eternal being is watching.

Jo kicẖẖ karahi so▫ī so▫ī jāṇai rahai na kacẖẖū▫ai cẖẖānī|| Rahā▫o||
jo kichh karahi - whatever you do - jo kichh; so▫ī so▫ī jāṇai - Each of those things soi soi; janai - he knows. rahai na kachhu-ai chhaani - nothing rahai - remains; na kachhuuai - means nothing remains chhaani - concealed. Rahao - Maharaj ji says pause and think about this, meditate about this today.

Jihvā su▫āḏ lobẖ maḏ māṯo upje anik bikārā.||
Jihvā su▫āḏ lobẖ maḏ māṯo - Your tongue is intoxicated with suaad - with tastes; lobh mad mato; mad - you are drunk with wine of lobh - greed, which has intoxicated you further. upje anik bikara - Now there are two things which come up in Gurbani, lobh - meaning greed and lab - meaning taste of the tongue. Maharaj Ji is mentioning both in this tuk, in this pankatee - in this line of Gurbani. upje anik bikara; anik means countless, upje means to soring, to come forth; bikara - many different sins come out with these two things. Simply for taste and greed man commits many, many, many bad sins.

Bahuṯ jon bẖarmaṯ ḏukẖ pā▫i▫ā ha▫umai banḏẖan ke bẖārā. ||2||
You have been bharmat - wandering for bahut jon - many lifetimes. And you have been paa-i-a - receiving dukh - pain. Why? haumai - ego; bhara - the weight of; bandhan - the chain of ego. It is that weight of ego that brings you back into this world. Reincarnate again and again, O human being.

Ḏe▫e kivāṛ anik paṛ▫ḏe mėh par ḏārā sang fākai. ||
Ḏe▫e kivāṛ anik paṛ▫ḏe mėh; deh kivaar - close the door; anik parde meh - and hidden behind countless curtains; pardemeans screens. What do you do? par ḏārā sang fākai. - Now what does that mean? You commit adultery, par darameans with another’s partner, another’s wife or husband; sang means with; dara literally means wife; but we are translating it for both as men and women. We can translate as wife and husband, life partners. You close the doors, you put up many types of things.

Cẖiṯar gupaṯ jab lekẖā māgėh ṯab ka▫uṇ paṛ▫ḏā ṯerā dẖākai. ||3||
But Dhan Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji says Cẖiṯar gupaṯ jab lekẖā māgėh When chitar gupat - two angelic beings mentioned in Gurbai which record everything we do day and night; lekha mageh - when they ask for our accounts of what we have done then, ṯab ka▫uṇ paṛ▫ḏā ṯerā dẖākai; tab - then; kaun - who can; dhakai - cover your parda - screen; who can cover you up with the screen then? This rhetorical question is telling us that no one will cover us then because they have seen everything.

Ḏīn ḏa▫i▫āl pūran ḏukẖ bẖanjan ṯum bin ot na kā▫ī. ||
That Akal Purakh, Waheguru, puran - perfect being; din dayal - upon the meek; dukh bhajan - the one who breaks the pain; O Waheguru tum bin - without you; ot na kai - I have no other support. Sachay Padshah Ji is saying in this whole Shabad, remember Akal Purakh Waheguru Ji is with you, and, if you are going through all these intoxications, if you are going carrying the ego, taste, greed, then this must be your Ardaas Maharaj Ji is saying. Seek the support of Waheguru Ji.

Kādẖ leho sansār sāgar mėh Nānak parabẖ sarṇā▫ī. ||4||15||26||
Do this Ardaas, kadh leho - means lift me from sansaar - world; saagar - ocean. Nānak parabẖ sarṇā▫ī - Guru Ji says you should come into the sarnai - protection of parabh - Waheguru, into the protection of Almighty. That is what Guru Sahib Ji is saying in this Hukamnama today.

Kādẖ leho sansār sāgar mėh Nānak parabẖ sarṇā▫ī.||

Waheguru ji ka Khalsa ! Waheguru ji ki Fateh !
