vad-hans mehlaa 4.
SatGuru
Ram Das Ji Maharaj is speaking to us today in Vadhans Raag.
haN-u gur bin haN-u
gur bin kharee nimaanee raam.
Guru
Ji begins the Shabad with haN-u
gur bin haN-u gur bin kharee nimaanee raam Guru Piaario, Guru Ji is sayinghaun
gur bin, haun without the Guru, without being connected to the Guru,
without living with the Guru in my life,haN-u gur bin haN-u gur bin Guru
Sahib Ji is saying again and again, kharee nimaanee raam,
kharee completely, nimaanee, I have no other
honor, I have no one else, and when this idea of nimaan
comes up, it is not talking about ego. What this concept in Sikhi is that faith, that knowledge, that spark inside that
you know that the Guru is with you all the time. To have that positive type of
honor; to have that positive type of pride that I have my Guru always with me;
I have Guru's hand upon my head. Not have ego but to say I am the best, I am
not forlorn, I am not homeless because I have Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj, Guru
Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj, Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj to guide me. That
type of honor that stops us from going anywhere else and leads us back to Guru
Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj because we know Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj is with us at all times. Guru Ram Das Ji is
saying in this Shabad is that without the Guru I have no one to have pride in,
I have no one to have any confidence in.
jagjeevan jagjeevan daataa gur mayl samaanee
raam.
Thatjagjeevan, that life in the world, God, Waheguru, daataa,
giver to all, only through the Guru, mayl samaanee raam, can you bemayl -united and samaanee merge with the
Waheguru, Raam, O people. Raam here is a
way of calling a collection of people, a group of people, O people of the
world. And also it is one of the names of the God.
satgur mayl har naam
samaanee jap har har naam Dhi-aa-i-aa.
mayl meaning
united, being united with the Satguru, har naam samaanee we
merge in with the Waheguru. What does the Guru do? The eternal Guru Sri Guru
Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj? When we unite with them they bless us withhar naam, with the name of the God. And when wesamaanee, completely merge with the name of the God, and how
do we merge in with the name of the God? By repeating it again and again and
again. jap har har naam Dhi-aa-i-aa,jap, meditating upon har
har naam, the name of Hari, Waheguru who can har
take away all of our pains. har means to destroy our pains
and har who nourishes us, who regenerates us, who helps us
blossom forth. Dhi-aa-i-aa
I meditate upon that name of Waheguru, of God.
jis kaaran haN-u dhoondh dhoodhaydee so sajan har ghar paa-i-aa.
jis kaaran For which
reason haN-u dhoondh dhoodhaydee,
who I was searching for allover, in many places, so sajan har ghar
paa-i-aa, so sajan , that God who I was looking for,
searching for that friend who I was looking for, who has been with me since the
beginning of time, har ghar paa-i-aa that Hari, Waheguru I
have found through the Guru's Grace, by meditating upon the naam I have found
that Waheguru within ghar, within the home of myself, inside.
ayk darisat har ayko jaataa
har aatam raam pachhaanee.
When
you are united with God, ayk darisat, all you can see is
that great one, ayk Lord, Waheguru. har ayko jaataa
And I have only known or have knowledge of that one Waheguru. har aatam
raam pachhaanee And
through the Guru's grace by meditating upon naam I havepachhaanee, come to understand and realize inside myaatam, my own spiritual self, that Raam, that Waheguru, that
Hari is abiding within me.
haN-u gur bin haN-u
gur bin kharee nimaanee. ||1||
Without
the Guru I do not have that support, that confidence, without the Guru I do not
have that honor, I do not have that support at all.
jinaa satgur jin satgur
paa-i-aa tin har parabh mayl milaa-ay raam.
Those
people, jinaa who have found paa-i-aa the SatGuru,
the eternal Guru, tin har parabh mayl
milaa-ay raam, tin , they have been, mayl milaa-ay, united
with har parabh, with Waheguru, with God. The eternal Guru
has united me with the parabhu, with Hari, with my Lord God.
tin charan tin charan sarayveh ham laagah tin kai paa-ay raam.
tin charan tin charan sarayveh, sarayveh I worship, I fall at
the feet charan of tin, those people ham laagah tin kai
paa-ay raam , I laagah attach myself
to their feet paa-ay. Why? What do you mean to attach
yourself to their feet? Their feet are walking along the path to the God.
Attaching yourself to their feet means to learn from their lives. Read the life
stories of the saints. Countless Gurmukhs, countless Gursikhs, read their life
stories. Attach yourself to their positive impact. Learn from what they did in
their lives and try to implement at least a tiny amount of it, at least a
little bit of it in your own lives.
har har charan sarayveh tin kay jin satgur purakh parabh Dha-yaa-i-aa.
har har charan sarayveh tin kay O Hari, O Waheguru I sarayveh fall at, I
worship, I adore the feet of those people who jin satgur purakh parabh Dha-yaa-i-aa. have meditated upon the name of
the purakh, the one eternal being, eternal SatGuru. Those
who have meditated upon Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj, who have read the Banee,
who have taken the Banee into their own heartsI worship them. I adore them. Why,
because from their lives I can see the true way of living life.
too vaddaataa antarjaamee
mayree sarDhaa poor har raa-i-aa.
Waheguru
you are the vaddaataa grace
giver on this world. antarjaamee You are the nerve of all
hearts. mayree sarDhaa poor har raa-i-aa You are the king, raa-i-aa,
O Lord, O Waheguru, mayree

which longing, which faith Guru Ji is talking about here? Guru Ji
answers in the next line.
gursikh mayl mayree sarDhaa pooree an-din raam gun gaa-ay.
How was
my faith going to be rewarded Waheguru Ji? How is it going to be fulfilled? gursikh mayl By meeting with
the Gursikhs, those Sikhs who walk upon the Guru's path, who belong to the
Guru, who follow what the Guru says. gursikh mayl By meeting with
them mayree sarDhaa pooree that brings to mission to my faith. That is what I
have been longing for. Why? Because I meet them an-din day and night. I gun gaa-ay
sing the praises, the virtues with them of Waheguru.
jin satgur jin satgur
paa-i-aa tin har parabh mayl milaa-ay. ||2||
jin
satgur paa-i-aa Those people who have found the eternal Guru tin har
parabh mayl milaa-ay they
will be united with the Hari, with Waheguru, with the Lord God.
haN-u vaaree haN-u
vaaree gursikh meet pi-aaray raam.
I am
a sacrifice,haN-u
vaaree I am a sacrifice to those
people who have given up their ego. haun means ego as well. They
sacrifice themselves, they are the true Gursikhs, they are true Guru's Sikhs.
They are the true friends. What does a friend do to you? A friend gives true
advise throughout, what does the Gursikhs do? They tell you bhai naam
japo, meditate upon the Naam. They tell us to follow what the Guru
says. pi-aaray - and they are the beloved. Aaye mil gursikh aaye mil tu mayray
gur kay pi-aaray Guru Ram Das Ji says again in Tilang Raag. tu
mayray gur kay pi-aaray They are the true beloved ones.
har naamo har naam sunaa-ay
mayraa pareetam naam aDhaaray raam.
har naamo har naam sunaa-ay
They meditate sunaa-ay upon har naam,
they chant the name of the Hari, and they sunaa-ay make me
listen to them as well. mayraa
pareetam naam aDhaaray raam And the way they
live their lives and the way meeting with them I have been inspired by is mayraa pareetam naam aDhaaray raam
My aDhaaray only support in my life is the name of mypareetam, of my beloved God.
har har naam mayraa paraan sakhaa-ee tis bin gharhee nimakh nahee jeevaaN
.
har har naam mayraa paraan sakhaa-ee The name of Waheguru is mayraa paraan sakhaa-ee
is with me as long as my breath is with me. paraan sakhaa-ee
means is with you just like your breath. Your breath has been there with you
the very first day you have come on this earth, and Waheguru Ji is been there
from the beginning of time with you. tis bin gharhee nimakh nahee
jeevaaN, gharhee nimakh even for a second, even for an instant I cannot livejeevaan without the name of the God.
har har kirpaa karay sukh-daata
gurmukh amrit peevaaN.
har har kirpaa karay sukh-daata When that sukh-daata, the giver
of the eternal peace Waheguru blesses us with His kirpaa,
with His grace gurmukh amrit peevaaN then we become Guru centered, and when we become
Guru centered we follow what the Guru
says. amrit peevaan
Then we physically drink the amrit and spiritually we drink
the Amrit, the Naam. Both spiritually and physically we are imbued with that
nectar, with that Amrit.
har aapay sarDhaa laa-ay
milaa-ay har aapay aap savaaray.
har aapay sarDhaa laa-ay milaa-ay Waheguru is the one who plants thatsarDhaa, that longing, that faith within us. laa-ay milaa-ay He
plants that and unites us with Him. har aapay aap savaaray., Waheguru himself savaaray embellishes
us, takes away our avgun, our vices and blesses us with
virtues.
haN-u vaaree haN-u
vaaree gursikh meet pi-aaray. ||3||
haN-u vaaree haN-u vaaree I am sacrifice to those Gursikhs, to those Gurmukhs
who have haN-u vaaree given up their haun, their sense
of ego. gursikh meet pi-aaray They are the true Gursikhs, they are themeet, they are the friends and pi-aaraythey
are the beloved ones.
har aapay har aapay purakh niranjan so-ee raam.
har aapay har aapay purakh niranjan
so-ee raam Waheguru Ji himself
is the purakh, the eternal being. niranjan
He is completely pure. so-ee raam Only that one Lord God
Waheguru is the purest.
har aapay har aapay maylai karai
so ho-ee raam.
har aapay har aapay maylai
Waheguru himself is the one who maylai unites us with
Himself. Sitting in Satguru, sitting in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj
Waheguru is uniting us with Himself. karai so ho-ee raam Whatever
He does that is what happens upon this earth.
o har parabh bhaavai so-ee hovai avar na karnaa
jaa-ee.
o har parabh bhaavai so-ee hovai Only
that which bhaavai that approves, which is pleasing to God, so-ee
hovai and that is what happens avar na karnaa jaa-ee
nothing else can be done. avar means nothing else,na karnaa jaa-ee cannot be done.
bahut si-aanap la-i-aa na
jaa-ee kar thaakay sabh chaturaa-ee.
bahut si-aanap la-i-aa na jaa-ee, bahut si-aanap With many clever tricks, with
many clever methods; bahut si-aanap even when we
have bahut much, means lot of, extremely clever, la-i-aa
na jaa-ee but this is not the way
of being united with God. You have to give up your si-aanap,
you have to give up your cleverness. kar thaakay sabh chaturaa-ee Everyone has given up theirchaturaa-ee, has gotten tired by doing their chaturaa-ee,
by doing their own cleverness. But through your own way you cannot get to God,
you must follow what the Guru says, follow the Guru's path. Through our own way
we simply act our own ego.
gur parsaad jan naanak daykhi-aa mai har bin avar
na ko-ee.
gur parsaad jan naanak daykhi-aa Through the Guru's grace Sri Guru Ram Das Ji says I
have daykhi-aa I have seen mai har bin avar na ko-ee
without bin Waheguru avar means any other na ko-ee
there is no other. There is no other for me but Waheguru. Waheguru is my only
support, Waheguru is the one who I have confidence in. Waheguru is the one who
is the support of my breath.
har aapay har aapay purakh niranjan so-ee. ||4||2||
Waheguru
Ji himself, Waheguru Ji himself is that purakh eternal being
who is completely immaculate; so-ee the one Lord God who is
abiding through all.
gur parsaad jan naanak daykhi-aa
mai har bin avar na ko-ee.||
har aapay har
aapay purakh niranjan so-ee.||
Waheguru ji ka Khalsa ! Waheguru ji ki Fateh !
