Bhai Inderjit Singh (Bombay)

Bhai Inderjit Singh Ji is a renowned Kirtani who has been serving Sri Harmandir Sahib, Amritsar for many years. He is proficient in Dasam Bani and has an extensive repertoire of Shabads. His father, Bhai Tarlok Singh Ji, was also a Hazoori Raagi who served in Gurdwara Janam Asthan Nankana Sahib. Bhai Inderjit Singh Ji's mother raised him and his five siblings singlehandedly after their father passed away on stage while doing Kirtan during the Shaheedi Purab of Guru Arjan Dev Ji. She instilled many qualities in them, including the importance of sharing food and doing Sewa. Music runs in Bhai Inderjit Singh Ji's blood, and he was drawn to it from a young age. He started learning Kirtan from Sangeetacharya Prof. Tara Singh Ji, who taught at Punjabi University, Patiala. He learned Raags, including Bilawal, and the art of performing Asa Di Vaar, using the Tanpura instead of a harmonium. He met many other knowledgeable musicians along the way from whom he picked up many lessons. He also stayed in Bombay at a local Gurdwara, where he learned to play the harmonium and started learning about Gurbani. After completing his exams, he did an Ardas at Gurdwara Dukh Niwaran Sahib, asking for the gift of 'Kirtan.' Shortly after this, he found his 'saathis' in Paonta Sahib and began his Kirtan journey. He served in Paonta Sahib for approximately two years before heading back to Bombay. Bhai Inderjit Singh Ji has been blessed with three children, two sons and one daughter. His youngest son, Simranjeet Singh, also follows in his father's footsteps and has accompanied him in Sri Harmandir Sahib and plays the mandolin. Currently, Simranjeet Singh is living in Bombay, and does Kirtan on his own. Bhai Inderjit Singh Ji's music style is contemporary Keertan and Raag, and most of the recordings available are from his visit to Malaysia and Singapore in the mid-1990s, before he started his service in Sri Harmandir Sahib. During this tour, he was accompanied on tabla by Bhai Gurjinder Singh, who also accompanied Bhai Kishanpal Singh Ji to Malaysia in 2000. Bhai Inderjit Singh Ji's teachings are spiritual, and he has delivered many speeches and discourses on this subject.
