My understanding of the five primal sounds is as follows:

Naad: Any sound that can be heard by the ear is called Naad.

In ancient India naad or sound was considered to be of two types:
1. Aahat Naad: When a sound (naad) is produced due to any reason by an instrument is called ‘Aahat Naad’.
2. Anahat Naad: When a sound (naad) is produced without any reason is called ‘Anahat Naad’. It’s also known as Svayambhu Naad (self-created sound).

Yogis in ancient India believed that when they had achieved nirvana, they could experience the Infinite through this Anahat Naad which they considered to be “the essence of all sounds- the Infinite”

In the Vedas and Simreetes various deities are said to have played various instruments. The five instruments [panch naad] that produce the Aahat Naad are as follows:

1. Mrydanga [clay-drum]: Brahma created the first ever musical instrument, a clay-drum made from blood-soaked earth, when he killed his enemy the demigod Tripura

2. Sankha [Conch-shell horn]: played by Vishnu. Within the sound-chamber of sankha Vishnu discovered the origin of music – “Om – the sacred key-note of cosmos”

3. Dhamru: an hour-glass shaped small drum covered with animal skin; played by Shiva in his depiction as Lord Natraj with which he sounds the notes of life and death

4. Veena: played by goddess Saraswati, consort of Brahma. It is believed she invented the seven-toned scale. The ragmala or necklace of modes is also her creation and is believed to be the first rosary

5. Flute: played by Lord Krishna. The magic of his music exerted a mysterious influence over man and beast.

The following from Bhai Sahib Bhai Randhir singh ji's book should help in identifying panch shabad and how they differ from Anhad shabad of Gurmat.


Bhai Sahib's Saakhi about Anhad Shabad

Radhasoamis and Yogis claim that the Anhad Shabad are 5 in number and they use Gurbani Shabads containing "Panch Shabad" to prove their point that there are 5 kinds of Anhad Shabad. The word "Panch" also means superior or great. "Panch Shabad" actually means superior or celestial Shabads that Gurmukhs hear when their Dasam Duaar opens up. Below is a very interesting story from Bhai Sahib's life, and that sheds a great deal on Anhad Shabads. This Saakhi has been taken from Bhai Sahib's book "Anhad Shabad Dasam Duaar". It's not a direct translation.

Once a gursikh came to Bhai Sahib and started talking about Anhad Shabad. He said that he could now clearly hear the bell ring, sometimes the roaring of clouds and even a flute. He wanted to confirm his spiritual state with Bhai Sahib. Bhai Sahib in response to his question said that he did not hear any of these voices and sounds i.e. instrumental sounds. At this he got greatly disheartened.

Bhai Sahib asked him what exactly he was doing while doing abhyaas. He said that he had a black dot on the wall for dhyaan (concentration) and he does one Siri Sukhmani Sahib paath looking at the dot. Then he kept his mind quiet and tried to listen to the five kinds of celestial sounds (as written by Yogis and Radhasoamis). After a while he started hearing faint sounds of ringing bells, waterfall, flute etc. The black dot too illuminated and this really motivated him and he started thinking that he was listening to Anhad Shabad.

Bhai Sahib did not doubt what he was telling because Bhai Sahib knew that this person was telling the truth. Bhai Sahib told him that they would discuss this again the next day. That day at night Bhai Sahib sat in Smadhi and tried to hear the five sounds this person was mentioning. He could not hear anything other than Gurmat Anhad Shabad (Sifat Salaah that occurs in Sachkhand). From this high spiritual state, Bhai Sahib brought down his surtee to a much lower level and he was surprised to hear that all five sounds that the Gursikh had mentioned could be heard at different levels. Bhai Sahib has written that there was not even 1/millionth anand or bliss in these instrumental sounds as compared to the Gurmat Anhad Shabad. Bhai Sahib had never delved in these mystical realms since they were at a much lower level as compared to Gurmat Dasam Duar.

Bhai Sahib came out of smadhi and immediately went to that gursikh who had asked this question from Bhai Sahib and told him that he was totally engaged in wrong anti-Gurmat practices. Bhai Sahib narrated to him about his experience and told him that little bit of concentration that he had was a result of Siri Sukhmani Sahib paath and he started hearing those instrumental sounds. Bhai Sahib said that these spiritual realms were lower than the lofty spiritual realms of Gurmat. Bhai Sahib told him that Gurmat Anhad Shabad is way superior to the 5 so called Anhad Shabads.

From this saakhi of Bhai Sahib we learn that these five shabads that Radhasoamis talk about do exist but they are not attained by the way they work in it. Actually these five shabads are the invention or discovery of Yogis and RS has just adopted their theory. Gurmat does not believe in limited 5 shabads. Panch Shabad in Gurbani does not mean 5 Shabad but Panch means superior or greatest shabads. Gurmat believes in “Vajae Shabad Ghanaray” i.e. countless shabads and not only 5.

Sangat ji please help what " are five primal sounds " in the following shabad of Gurbani !!

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥
Shalok, First Mehl:

ਘਰ ਮਹਿ ਘਰੁ ਦੇਖਾਇ ਦੇਇ; ਸੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ॥
The True Guru is the All-knowing Primal Being; He shows us our true home within the home of the self.

ਪੰਚ ਸਬਦ ਧੁਨਿਕਾਰ ਧੁਨਿ; ਤਹ ਬਾਜੈ, ਸਬਦੁ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥
The Panch Shabad, the Five Primal Sounds, resonate and resound within; the insignia of the Shabad is revealed there, vibrating gloriously.

ਦੀਪ ਲੋਅ ਪਾਤਾਲ ਤਹ; ਖੰਡ ਮੰਡਲ ਹੈਰਾਨੁ ॥
Worlds and realms, nether regions, solar systems and galaxies are wondrously revealed.

ਤਾਰ ਘੋਰ ਬਾਜਿੰਤ੍ਰ ਤਹ; ਸਾਚਿ ਤਖਤਿ ਸੁਲਤਾਨੁ ॥
The strings and the harps vibrate and resound; the true throne of the Lord is there.

ਸੁਖਮਨ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਰਾਗੁ ਸੁਨਿ; ਸੁੰਨਿ ਮੰਡਲਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥
Listen to the music of the home of the heart - Sukhmani, peace of mind. Lovingly tune in to His state of celestial ecstasy.

ਅਕਥ ਕਥਾ ਬੀਚਾਰੀਐ; ਮਨਸਾ ਮਨਹਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
Contemplate the Unspoken Speech, and the desires of the mind are dissolved.

ਉਲਟਿ ਕਮਲੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਭਰਿਆ; ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਕਤਹੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
The heart-lotus is turned upside-down, and is filled with Ambrosial Nectar. This mind does not go out; it does not get distracted.

ਅਜਪਾ ਜਾਪੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ; ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
It does not forget the Chant which is chanted without chanting; it is immersed in the Primal Lord God of the ages.

ਸਭਿ ਸਖੀਆ ਪੰਚੇ ਮਿਲੇ; ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸੁ ॥
All the sister-companions are blessed with the five virtues. The Gurmukhs dwell in the home of the self deep within.

ਸਬਦੁ ਖੋਜਿ ਇਹੁ ਘਰੁ ਲਹੈ; ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਦਾਸੁ ॥੧॥
Nanak is the slave of that one who seeks the Shabad and finds this home within. ||1||

1_Guru g also asked in gurbani ..pa(n)ch dhooth thudhh vas keethae kaal ka(n)ttak maariaa ||
It means panch doot = kaam, krdh , lobh, moh, hankaar....

2_Ik onkar means- the god is one.... not 3 or 4.

3_panch shabad means - five sounds which is viberate in the center of two eyes in the head .. it is not produced by instrument such as tabla, chimta bansuri etc.. because it is made by humans but which five primal sounds guru g asked that produced sound without any instrument ..
4_ panj mehal panja vich chanan _ it means - which panch shabad is listen that is viberates in five mandals step by step ..

5_ kabir sahib g asked _ ghungat ka pat khol re toh ko peev melenge .. keh kabir anand bhyo hai . Bajat anhad dhol re ..it means when we enter in our body then we will listen nonstop drums ....
6_ guru amar dass g said_ eh manua sun smadh lgave joti jot milai .. it means sit quite in smadhi then u meet your soul to god ..

7_ guru nanak dev g said that - akha bajho vekhna .bin kana sun na . Para bajoh chalna bin hatha karna . Jeebe bajoh bolna eyon jeevat marna .. nakak hukam pashan k tyo khasme milna..
It means our body eyes ,,ears, hands, foots, etc these are not able to meet u with god .. then why we asked that five sounds of tabla bansuri etc .. these are man made and this body listen.. but about which sound guru g said that is listen by our soul ears when we sit in smadhi then we are able to listen ..

Each and every saints said that the god is one and he meet from our body in the form of sound and light because god have no shape .,size and colour..

Bhul chuk maf krni g hath jod k mafi mangda g j kuj ucha neeva bolya hove..
Waheguru jee ka khalsa waheguru jee ki fateh..... satnam waheguru..

Ghar ( sometimes called as Ghad 'fortress') means body.

as in the Shabad
Sab kich ghar me bahar nahi
( this doesn't mean everything is in home/house, but inside the body).

vaajae pa(n)ch sabadh thith ghar sabhaagai ||

5 primal senses echo in the body/mind in which God enters/resides.
These 5 senses are as below


Some people might not agree as this is Buddhist concept. :)
