Yoga v/s Simran . Is there any comparison ?

Postby Harmanjeet » Sun Jun 21, 2015 8:50 am

So today is International Yoga Day. Yoga is particularly popularized in India by yogi ramdev baba .
There are various breathing exercises . My mom does them and says she feels better.
But I told her naam simran is above all of it.

What do you think ? Is it even fair to compare yogic exercises (which are very popular thesedays for physical and mental well being) with naam sadhana ( which doesn't get anywhere close media coverage as yoga does)

gurbani says "uchhe upar ucha nau" (highest of all is name of god) .
"sarab rog ka aukhad naam, kalyan roop mangal gun gaam" (name of god is medicine of all diseases, chanting of it is auspicious )

What do you guys just think about it ? like is it even fair to compare yoga and simran ? does simran give health benefits too ? then why simran is nowhere as popular as yoga is ?

waheguru ji ka khalsa waheguru ji ki fateh

Yoga and Simran are two different things. Not comparable.

Yoga is technique to do exercise, where we force our body to do some exercise.

Simran is technique to memorize something.

Our mind does simran all the times of past, future, worries and problems.

In Gurbani Simran is recommended of naam of Waheguru or virtues, qualities and greatness of God.

Simran impact on our mind, which reflects in our actions. If we do simran of waheguru then God will reflect in our actions otherwise Maya will reflect in our actions.

Simran of naam is love. We cannot get love with exercise. We can’t see love with our eyes. It is feeling which we can understand. Everyone do Simran of God for fear, to solve problems, for things etc . Only few do simran for love with God.

Thanks!

I was reading this Shabad yesterday and came across the following lines on page 642

ਜੋਗ ਸਿਧ ਆਸਣ ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹ ਏ ਭੀ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ॥
One may practices the eighty-four postures as taught by Siddhas the accomplished teachers of Yoga, but one gets tired of practicing them [i.e. if the aim is salvation]

ਵਡੀ ਆਰਜਾ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਜਨਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਸੰਗੁ ਨ ਗਹਿਆ ॥੬॥
He may have a long life [i.e. practicing these postures], but he will not meet with the Lord, he is reincarnated again and again ||6||

I hope this answers your query about Yoga. One will not get emancipation doing it.

Please change the word "memorize" to "remembering or thinking" for simran.

Thanks!

yoga or simran both do very little to become divine. yoga is physical exercises and simran together. simran is only simran. if one reads sggs there is something else which changes the mind. divinity is a mental or soul changing game. both play very little role to change the mental thinking although we all say so

Sometime back this Shabad was read as Hukamnama - Sri Harmandar Sahib Amritsar

For deeper understanding, read Punjabi translation by Prof. Sahib Singh at
