Post by Kaur Mann »

I am always confused that what is the mryada and time for kirtan sohila path sahib, should married couple do this before going to bed or after their intimacy? can anyone give a wise answer for this.

Bibi Kaur Mann ji,

In my view the important part is that you recite Kirtan Sohila before going to bed, and then contemplate on the message (while reciting and anytime during the rest of the day) and follow it. Whether you recite Sohila before or after intimacy is of no importance. The only reason the order may become relevant is if you or your spouse usually get so pre-occupied by anticipation of intimacy that you are not able to concentrate on gurbani. In that event it would be better to recite after the intimacy.

Many faiths put a lot of emphasis on ritualistic prayer. Hindu mantras are believed to be effective only if they are recited at the right time, by right people, doing and saying things in a very precise manner. Similarly, Islamic Namaz is also rich in ritualism. A Namaz to be effective must be recited at precise times, and the ritual involves ablution and the repetition of a dozen prescribed physical actions, words and prayers. Sikhism on the other hand rejects ritualism and the prayer focusses on supplication and self-awareness. The small island of Sikhism has existed in an ocean of Hinduism and Islam. Therefore, even though Guru instructs otherwise, it’s hard for Sikhs to shake the influence of other dominant religions.

Gurbani , aimed at transforming our mind, is a set of instructions which must be understood and followed. Like learning any other subject there are best practices such as: practice regularly every day, have a routine and set minimum goals, do not overdo things, be in it for a steady long haul. Sikh rehat maryada has spelled out some best practices for us to follow. But it’s important that we understand that these instructions in maryada are not rituals. We will not gain anything by reading gurbani in a ritualistic manner without paying attention to the message. The principle of 'ਸੁਣਿਆ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਮਨਿ ਕੀਤਾ ਭਾਉ ॥ Listening and believing with love and humility in your mind (SGGS 4)' is key for a Sikh.

it is always good to recite gurbani after intimate relations.because the mind is relaxed. that is what is required to recite gurbani.

I don't think so. Because kirtan sohila is read at the time if feeling sleepy or you going to sleep.
