Beswa - A Joon or State of Mind - A Thought !!!

Post by Sikhya »

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa,
Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh.

Quite often the following shabad is interpreted in a way that whatever we do at last moment of life (ਅੰਤਿ ਕਾਲਿ), that decides which jooni we are going to get in next life. For reference sake, widely accepted meanings of this Shabad are as follows:

At the very last moment, one who thinks of wealth, and dies in such thoughts,

shall be reincarnated over and over again, in the form of serpents. ||1||

O sister, do not forget the Name of the Lord of the Universe. ||Pause||

At the very last moment, he who thinks of women, and dies in such thoughts,

shall be reincarnated over and over again as a prostitute. ||2||

At the very last moment, one who thinks of his children, and dies in such thoughts,

shall be reincarnated over and over again as a pig. ||3||

At the very last moment, one who thinks of mansions, and dies in such thoughts,

shall be reincarnated over and over again as a goblin. ||4||

At the very last moment, one who thinks of the Lord, and dies in such thoughts,

says Trilochan, that man shall be liberated; the Lord shall abide in his heart. ||5||2||

Some of the issues with current interpretation:

1) In second para Gurbani is guiding that anyone who dies with thought of women at last moment, gets reincarnated as prostitute. The issue “Is prostitute a Joon or Profession?”.
2) If someone still comes back into Manukhi Joon (prostitute) by remembering woman, then there shouldn’t be any problem in doing so, because at the end of the day Gurbani advocates that Manukhi joon is supreme joon. If we can come back to supreme joon by remembering woman and escape the 84 Lakh joon cycle, then what is the problem in doing so?
3) As per gubani even prostitute (Ganika) can get one to one with Akal Purakh. If prostitute can also attain salvation, then what is the problem in coming back as Prostitute? At least we are saved from becoming animals or tree?
4) In fourth para Shabad guides us that if we get indulged into materialistic world of making assets then we will be reincarnated again and again as goblin (ਪ੍ਰੇਤ). The first thing to consider is “Does Gurbani believe in goblins”? Even if it believes in goblins, they don’t die (as they don’t have body), then how come they are re-incarnated again and again? If something is not dying, how can it’s born again and again?

The better interpretation of this shabad can be achieved by giving a pause before word joni (ਜੋਨਿ) in each line. Sarap (ਸਰਪ), Beswa (ਬੇਸਵਾ), Sookar (ਸੂਕਰ ) and Pret (ਪ੍ਰੇਤ) are the names given to those people who have lived their current life in different aspects of maya and now there process of reincarnations will start. Gurbani has done such comparisons in many others places. For e.g.

kookar koorr kamaaeeai gur ni(n)dhaa pachai pachaan ||
Those who practice falsehood are dogs; those who slander the Guru shall burn in their own fire

bin simaran bheae kookar kaam ||
Without meditating in remembrance on the Lord, one acts like a dog

bin simaran garadhhabh kee niaaee ||
Without meditating in remembrance on the Lord, one is like a donkey.

sae kookar sookar garadhhabh pavehi garabh jonee dhay maarae mehaa hathiaarae ||3||
They are like dogs, pigs and jackasses; they are cast into the womb of reincarnation, and the Lord strikes them down as the worst of murderers. ||3||

Now let’s come back to main shabad and in light of Gurbani try to re-interpret for better meanings:

At the very last moment, one who thinks of wealth, and dies in such thoughts,

O Serpent - Now you will be reincarnated over and over again. ||1||

O sister, do not forget the Name of the Lord of the Universe. ||Pause||

At the very last moment, he who thinks of women, and dies in such thoughts,

O Prostitute – You shall be reincarnated over and over again. ||2||

At the very last moment, one who thinks of his children, and dies in such thoughts,

O Pig – You shall be reincarnated over and over again. ||3||

At the very last moment, one who thinks of mansions, and dies in such thoughts,

O Goblin – You shall be reincarnated over and over again. ||4||

At the very last moment, one who thinks of the Lord, and dies in such thoughts,

says Trilochan, that man shall be liberated; the Lord shall abide in his heart. ||5||2||

This is not the final decision on the meanings of Gurbani. Gurbani is very deep and not possible for our brains to interpret it in same spirit what Bhagats and Gur Sahibaans experienced.

Please feel free to share this if you advocate with the thoughts and also feel free to provide the feedback on this article.

Food for thought: Try to unlock the meaning of Ant Ki Baar. Can gursikhi approve the ideology that whatever we do at last minute will decide the future? If Sikhi is about dying while living, then how come one thought at last moment save the reincarnation? Happy finding !!!

Sikhya Ji,

Very well said and I agree with you about interpretation of the shabad. One of the things we tend to overlook is that we can't simply take few shabads and interpret them out of context. The meanings and teachings should be in context to what is written in Guru Granth Sahib.

Gurbani teaches us that it's a lifelong process. If someone has not spent his life in remembrance and contemplation, it will be difficult to do so towards the end. We see it in real life. People who spent their lives worried about wealth or kids or family and stay in that state of mind even when the end is near. The focus of this shabad is to teach that lesson, remembrance of God, not what form any individual will re-incarnate in.

I think Guru is saying that the last second of your life reflects your life's earnings. So if you are into things other than Guru, you will not remember Guru in the last second. You will think about things which are most important to you. And because of those attachments, your next life will be so.. that you will be 'attached' to that thing for whole life. It may be possible that you come to hate it. Trust me, if you don't have Guru truly in your heart, you will not say Waheguru with your last breath. It has to be like an involuntary reaction :)

It can be interpreted that women means kaam and that a person who thinks of a woman or has woman kaamic thoughts will come back as a pro’ so that they can live out their next life in the filth that takes place in this profession. Just because some scientist has categorised joons as cats, dogs, fish and birds does not necessarily mean that they are the only joons. Joons can be classified in many different ways and there is no reason why pro’ cannot be categorised as a joon.
If someone still comes back into Manukhi Joon (prostitute) by remembering woman, then there shouldn’t be any problem in doing so, because at the end of the day Gurbani advocates that Manukhi joon is supreme joon. If we can come back to supreme joon by remembering woman and escape the 84 Lakh joon cycle, then what is the problem in doing so?
Really? You don’t think coming back as a prostitute is not going to be a problem? You will spend your whole life servicing your clients and at the end what will you have accumulated for your next life? certainly not naam. So after this life you will return to chaurasi lakh joon, what will you have gained? Other then remaining in kaam and being abused all your life.
As per gubani even prostitute (Ganika) can get one to one with Akal Purakh. If prostitute can also attain salvation, then what is the problem in coming back as Prostitute? At least we are saved from becoming animals or tree?
Yes, even a prostitute can get salvation with Gurus grace, but how many Ganikas have there been? Not many I suspect. 99.999% of Pro’s will live out their lives in misery and abuse and what will they take to the next life from here?
In fourth para Shabad guides us that if we get indulged into materialistic world of making assets then we will be reincarnated again and again as goblin (ਪ੍ਰੇਤ). The first thing to consider is “Does Gurbani believe in goblins”? Even if it believes in goblins, they don’t die (as they don’t have body), then how come they are re-incarnated again and again? If something is not dying, how can it’s born again and again?
Gurbani absolutely believes in goblins, ghosts, spirits.

Tilang, Fifth Mehla, First House:
One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
The Lord infused His Light into the dust, and created the world, the universe.
The sky, the earth, the trees, and the water - all are the Creation of the Lord. ||1||
O human being, whatever you can see with your eyes, shall perish.
The world eats dead carcasses, living by neglect and greed. ||Pause||
Like a goblin, or a beast, they kill and eat the forbidden carcasses of meat.
So control your urges, or else you will be seized by the Lord, and thrown into the tortures of hell. ||2||
Your benefactors, presents, companions, courts, lands and homes
- when Azraa-eel, the Messenger of Death seizes you, what good will these be to you then? ||3||
The Pure Lord God knows your condition.
O Nanak, recite your prayer to the holy people. ||4||1||ang 723

The whole jist of the shabad is that one who contemplates Akaal all his life will only think of Akaal Purkh at the end. One who has spent all his life running after money with no naam simran to his credit then at the very end of his life how will he remember God? The only thing that will come to his mind is his maya, and even if one thought remains that ties you to this world then that karam will force you back to here to work it through.

Goblins or prates are not immortal. They are a joon like many other. Goblins may have life spans of hundreds of years or maybe thousands of years but at the end they will submit to Kaal like everything else, even devtay and dhents are joons and even they will succumb to kaal at some point.

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa,
Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh.

Bundha Ji,

Totally agree with your views. I think at the end the aim is about what lesson have we learnt from Shabad and you have given a very good summary

"The whole jist of the shabad is that one who contemplates Akaal all his life will only think of Akaal Purkh at the end. One who has spent all his life running after money with no naam simran to his credit then at the very end of his life how will he remember God? "

The key is how we spend whole life? Doesnt matter where we go in next life because we are here to make this life a meaningful and this is golden chance to meet HIM. I think we are all on same page in terms of what we are learning from this shabad. The lesson is to live this life in HIS rememberance.

Also, I didn't present this feeling because of any scientific logic. My personal belief is that science and GURMAT are total different subjects. Science can follow GURMAT but GURMAT's veechar can't follow what science thinks. This is just my humble feeling and if somewhere in the article it felt that I linked joonis to joonis of science, then I apologise for that. Gurbani can get its definitions only from Gurbani itself and the biggest thing behind the words is feeling and we all have shared the same feeling
"most important thing is how we spend this life"

Thanks for sharing your views.

Dear Sikhya Ji,

Thanks for raising such a beautiful issue. This is a very difficult shabad and you have made a good attempt.

I have heard that there is some meaning/interpretation given by Bhupinder Singh of the USA recently - can somebody please share that interpretation with us.

Thanks
