Re: JOKES ON SARDARS
some jokes can be funny others are just plain insults and cant really be tolerated.
though i do agree with sarabjit veer ji to some extent we do over react, if you see the amount of jokes jews and blonds gets is much more than sicks and yet we do not hear of the complaing of it as much
but ifthe joke was intended to hurt then yes by all means do something about it, we shouldnt really mind about small jokes intended to lighten ones mood but nor should we be expected to tolerate blatent insults

Re: JOKES ON SARDARS
Fateh parwaan karr jiyo,
There is this Serial on SAB TV named Tarak Mehta ka oolta chashma. There's a Sikh character in this Serial and whenever he comes on the scene in the background you hear ' Oh Bhapaji'. There are other characters from different religions but when they come on to the scene there is no lampooning done in the background.
We must protest and make them stop this. I have already registered my protest and I would request you all to do the same

Hello Kaurageous ji,
I'm going to have to ask why? Why should we not tolerate blatant insults? What power has an insult to do actual harm to anybody? Does it not seem just a little silly to let mere words effect us so? What do we teach our children about coping with the shoolyard bully who may call them names? Do we teach them to re-act in anger or do we advise them to ignore them?
It is very very strange to me, this power of words to effect people so. If a man insults me then I ask myself, is what he said about me true? Inveriably it is not, so I just cannot bring myself to be bothered with the untruthfull. Instead I walk away and sever ties with this kind of person.

Re: JOKES ON SARDARS
lot of people actually don't even realise how much these jokes hurt us.
My own best friend once sent me a Sikh joke on Orkut, the joke was very offencive, upset me deeply. My first action was to delete that joke. Secondly i replied to her telling her how much the joke hurt me and every sikh, and it was wrong and why. seconds later she replied saying she didn't know what the joke meant, since she didn't even understand punjabi language.
so there you have it, it might be as simple as just telling the person calmly that what they say is offensive, wrong and upsets you. you can tell someone verbly, by mail, sms, report abuse if it is discriminating or offensive, etc.
hope i helped. vadh-khutt boleya muaff karna.

Re: JOKES ON SARDARS
I was raised in Punjab, and until I went to college, never had lived outside Punjab. So, I was pretty shocked when I discovered that Sikhs were the butt of jokes among the (mainly) Hindu people of India. By the way, since I have also lived in south India at times, the jokes are far less common there than they are in northern India.
I just think that these jokes are an expression of insecurity and jealousy that many Hindus feel. So, while I do not befriend people who make these racist jokes, I do not needlessly confront them either. Be true to yourself, and like a lotus, rise out of the pond.

ImperfectSikh ji,
Right on. I too think this is the case (insecurity and jealousy) and the right attitude (Be true to yourself).
