Taali (clap) and Khali ( waving of hand) is method of timekeeping ( counting of beats) during playing and singing.
The vocalist communicates with tabla player with clap and wave. Clap also indicate highly stressed and khaali moderately stresses beats.
Each taal has its own pattern of taali and khaali like dadra - clap, 2, 3, wave, 2, 3 - two sections containing 3 beats in each section first starting with clap and second with wave.

The tempo i.e slow, medium, fast of taal is called Laya which you can improve only by practice.

There are some software available for practice and learning. Some are free too.

Free midi files are also available on the net.
