Can't find a certain Sihk spiritual name
Can't find a certain Sihk spiritual name
Hi all This is my first post and i am currently dating a girl who has a sikh spiritual side. She follows a certain aspect of the religion.
She mentioned her sikh spiritual name and i remember how she said it, but not what it meant. I would rather find out without asking her again to surprise her next time we meet when i bring it up again.
Below is my interpretation of how it sounds if you say it with an english accent and the words are purely based upon how i think it sounds, not how it should be spelled.
Gee wan gee dee call
If anyone could translate this and show me how it is spelled. Then i would appreciate any help.
Cheers,
Chris

Gee wan gee dee call
that "call" is surely "Kaur".. It is a title used by all Sikh Women... it means "princess"

Hello,
Is she white sikh? If so, the call would be 'Khalsa'
1st name something like Jeewan/Jiwan
Her name could be Jiwan Kaur Khalsa, if that sounds like something she said..

If the way I figured it out is right, it means:
Jiwan: Life
Kaur: Princess
Khalsa: Pure
Another version of her name could be Jiwan Ji Kaur Khalsa

Re: Can't find a certain Sihk spiritual name
I've been poking around a little bit and at the moment. I've come across.
I'm quite convinced that the first part of her name is Jiwan meaning life. But i am still having trouble deciphering the last part.
It might have sounded like Jiwan Geet dee Kaur
Geet - (God's) song
I'm getting closer to translating it, but for now i have work to do! :P

Re: Can't find a certain Sihk spiritual name
After a little bit of searching, i now believe the first part of her name to be Jiwan meaing life.
And that her name now looks like this. Jiwan jeet dee kaur. I'm getting closer to completing the translation, but hopefully the forum has some answers :)
cheers,
Chris

Waheguru ji ka khalsa
Waheguru ji ki fateh
Just guessing,
The name could be 'Jiwan Jot Daya Kaur'
Meaning would be 'Copassion, the light of life' and Kaur is the normal last name of female sikhs.
Jiwan = life, Jot = light, Daya = compassion.
Again guessng, such long compound multiple word names are adopted by American Sikhs. For instance, Narayan Jot Kaur, Gur Mastak Singh, Guru Ka Singh Khalsa.
Sikhs from India adopt usually single word first names.
Humbly
Serjinder Singh

Where does the Ji come from? What does it mean? Could it be a filler word like the english word 'the'?pavneet.singh wrote:If the way I figured it out is right, it means:

It doesn't seem likely that your interpretation matches, because nanuckpunthee worked out that the 'call' meant Kaur. Not Khalsa.
All that's been worked out from the original:
"Gee wan gee dee call"
Is
Gee wan = Jiwan = Life
Call = Kaur = Princess
The only elements of the name to be deciphered now are 'gee dee'
I did a little more looking and found a few likely names.
'Dee' could be
'Dit or Ditt' = gift. (But the sentence becomes unnatural then and makes little sense in a grammatical sense.)
or
'Deep' =
1. The lamp of light. (Again makes little grammatical sense)
2. Source that illumines the mind or the spirit, celestial radiance
3. The land and the world
The second meaning for 'Deep' seams to make the most sense to far.
The second 'gee' could mean
'Jee' or 'jeet'
Jee = Life, Being, to come into existence
Jeet = Victory or Triumph, Victorious
Here. It seems likely that the second meaning of 'Jee' could be the answer.
So her name would look something like this.
Jiwan Jee Deep Kaur
Which translates into:
Life, being *the* source that illuminates the mind or the spirit. Princess
I added in the word 'the' to smooth the sentence out, to make it more coherent. I think this might be the one, since i think i remember her spiritual name being a little long!
She does a lot of kundalini yoga and she describes the yoga being an exercise to help make you more self aware of yourself and the things around you. Which does make sense with the name she chose if i've figured it out right.
Opinions?
Cheers,
Chris
