Sewa - are some types more blessed than others?

Post by Jaybee »

Hi all,

Sikhs are renowned for the giving of food, as Sewa, to whomever may need or want it. Obviously, this is much more severely needed by the homeless than others. Similarly, do Sikhs believe other forms of Sewa are equally blessed? Is it in any way tied to the level suffering you alleviate?

Example - if you give tuition to a child suffering from a learning difficulty, ie Mathematics, and change that child's life hugely for the better, is this (or not) more 'blessed' as giving a 60 yr old homeless man food? Or is it all the same?

Thanks,

Jaybee.

Jaybee,

Sewa is selfless service, from the doer's perspective its sewa if its selfless , For the receiver perspective its importance is linked to how much is that particular sewa needed.

An deed done with thought\belief that its already blessed is not Sewa, its just an act or deed and is not selfless, The act\deed should be "kabool\Manjur" in the court of lord, only then is it considered blessed.

As to why most Sikhs generally indulge in the deed of providing food is partly due to langar (food) being an integral part of Sikh way of life and also coz is one of the very basic human necessity and one doesn't have to be broke or homeless to appreciate a good cooked meal.

As to which deed is most likely to be blessed in the court of lord ? No one really knows, so best is to do a deed that you are able to do and which is most needed by folks around you (teach maths, give food, clothing etc ) and leave the blessing aspect on to later.

Hello Jaybee,

Top most Seva anybody can do is Jap Naam preferably at Amrit Vela (3 hours before sunrise).

Whether it's WAHEGURU, RAM, ALLAH or any other name.

Try and see the difference !

Gurdwara's or any Religious place should provide food, clothing & shelter (basic necessities) to needy.

Then comes taking care of sick after that imparting spiritual & temporal education.

However one can do any Seva if it has been assigned by one's teacher or Guru.
