Re: Translation of Siri Guru Granth Sahib

Claudia Ji, This is indeed the limitation of translations and the word itself! You used word God but even that may not be the correct word in how word God is perceived or commonly used . My understanding is that The Creator is called by various names in Guru Granth including Sahib which is translate...

Re: Battle of Chamkaur - Are the numbers grossly exaggerated

Battle of Chamkaur has been part of Sikh folk lore and legend and as such disputing exact numbers is misunderstanding the spirit of this battle and saga of Chamkaur. This event occurred right after the siege of Anandpur where Mughal Imperial army and Hill Chiefs combined forces tried to capture Guru...

Re: Sikh Reformism vs Nihang Traditions/Jhatka/Sukha Etc.

What does khalsa mean ? Pure. What is impure? Corruption. What causes corruption? Time. How do you do the cleaning? Reformation. Absolutely agree with you Singh Ji! I think the premise of this discussion was incorrect. With time, there are bound to be changes and nobody can control time. Nor do Sik...

Re: Congratulations! Jats Are Now, Officially, a Backward C

I don't understand why everyone is so bent upon shooting the messenger. What T. Sher Singh Ji wrote in the article is absolutely correct and true. Yes it's also bitter but what else do you expect? Sikhs are the ones who can't let go off their Jatthood and now they got exactly what they wanted. A bac...

Re: The Cow in Sikhism

There we go again! Not only bringing Dasam Granth into the discussion but also mis-quoting it. Jatinder Pal Ji, since you have quoted these lines and associated them with Guru Gobind Singh Ji, can you also explain the first line from the quotes you have used? Why Gobind ‘the protector of cows’ is so...

Re: The Cow in Sikhism

In my opinion, it was part cultural as in those days most people did not eat meat nor could they afford it. On top of that, lots of Sikhs converted from Hinduism therefore they probably had natural aversion towards beef. Even today, most Indian Sikhs don't eat beef or pork even if they do eat meat. ...

Re: Questions about death, evil, freewill etc

The concept of a God does not appear so warming if there is no devil. Simran Ji, The problem is not with God or Creator but with human psyche. We tend to look for external source to blame in the difficult times. This psychology gets exploited by variuos beliefs and individuals all the time. Gurbani...

Re: Is having a Guru necessary?

Gurbani stresses upon importance of Guru because it is through Guru that we learn and attain spiritual knowledge. Guru Nanak in the opening verses of Asa Di Vaar state: ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਦਿਉਹਾੜੀ ਸਦ ਵਾਰ ॥ balihaaree gur aapanae dhiouhaarree sadh vaar || A hundred times a day, I am a sacri...

Re: Questions about death, evil, freewill etc

Simran Ji, These questions are indeed difficult to comprehend. Freewill has been discussed in the previous posts which may give you some insight. In short, Sikhism believes in destined Hukam/ devine order which is prevailing everywhere but there is an element of Free Will which Gurbani reminds us ag...
