Surrey, BC - Gurdwara Sahib Dasmesh Darbar, one of the largest Gurdwara Sahibs in the Vancouver area announced that the 2008 Annual Vaisakhi Nagar Kirtan in Surrey will take place on Saturday April 12th. The celebrations will be held over the weekend to accommodate the thousands of Sikhs expected to arrive from around the world.
The 2007 Vaisakhi Nagar Kirtan attracted over 100,000 attendees which in addition to members of the Sikh faith, also included members of various communities.
The annual event has become the largest Vaisakhi Celebration in North America, which marks the creation of the Khalsa (Pure Ones) in 1699 by the tenth master Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Outside of the Sikh homeland of Punjab, the Surrey event is considered the largest and most elaborate Sikh celebrations. Similar to the 2007 parade, over 100,000 Sikhs and non-Sikhs are expected to attend the parade from around the world.
Preparations for the event are currently under way and volunteer recruitment is in progress. The Sikh Youth will play an integral role in event preparations and parade.
Everyone is invited to participate in the Nagar Kirtan.
Vaisakhi Background
Vaisakhi is one of the most important celebrations in the Sikh calendar. Vaisakhi is both the Sikh New Year and the anniversary of the founding of the Khalsa in 1699 by the 10th Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji. This day is considered the birthday of the Khalsa order.
Guru Amar Das Ji first institutionalised this as one of the special days when all Sikhs would gather to receive the Gurus blessings at Goindwal Sahib in 1567. In 1699 Guru Gobind Singh Ji gathered thousands at Anandpur Sahib and founded the Khalsa order by baptising five brave Sikhs who were willing to give their life for the Guru. The Five Beloved Ones in turn baptised Guru Gobind Singh Ji into the Khalsa brotherhood.
