N.M. Senators Want Sikh Leader Honored
The Associated Press
New Mexico senators have introduced a resolution to honor the late Sikh leader Yogi Bhajan.
Bhajan, who was credited with bringing Sikhism from India to the West, died Oct. 6 of heart failure. He was 75. He arrived in the West in the late 1960s and founded the Sikh Dharma in New Mexico's Española Valley. Sikhism was legally incorporated and recognized as a religion in the United States in 1971.
"Yogi Bhajan introduced thousands around the world to Sikhism, a religion that carries the message of truthful living and the fundamental unity of humanity and reaches out to people of all backgrounds to work together for peace," Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., said Thursday.
Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M., said Bhajan was an outstanding New Mexican.
"His message of peace and hope and his inspirational teachings ensure that although he is no longer with us, his legacy will live on," Domenici said.
