The World went 'Balle Balle' in 2008

December 29th, 2008 Source: economictimes.indiatimes.com

"I KNOW that my late grandmother and father, as well as my mother, myself and the entire country have believed that if there is one community that we can always be proud of - it is the Sikhs," said Rahul Gandhi on a recent visit to the Golden Temple in Amritsar.

His words struck the right note in 2008, a year when India's Singhs outshone all other communities and made the country proud.

This year has easily been the year of Punjab da puttar . In times when there was uncertainty all around with the economic slump, Singh became the catchword, an epitome of success across different fields.

Be it politics, sports, entertainment or business, the Punjabi community ruled 2008. From Singh is Kinng (Akshay Kumar) - Bollywood's hitherto highest grosser of 2008, to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh (in politics); and from Abhinav Singh Bindra and Vijender Singh (in sports) to brothers Malvinder and Shivinder Singh (in business), they constantly hit the headlines for the right reasons this year.

Abhinav Singh Bindra and Vijender Singh

While Abhinav Singh Bindra bagged India's first gold at the Olympics, golfer Jeev Milkha Singh too had a wonderful 2008, winning as many as four golf titles and reaching his career-best ranking of 36.

A proud A S Bindra, (Abhinav's father) had remarked after his son's gold medal; "My son has proved that 'Singh is King' in the real sense. He has brought laurels for the whole Sikh community and for the whole nation."

But Abhinav Singh Bindra chooses to put things humbly: "As far as my own achievement is concerned, it is a breakthrough at least for myself and the community. It was a distant dream that had been eluding Indians. I am happy it is now a reality."

The impact of the Singhs has been felt in many spheres.

Says Santosh Desai, MD and CEO of Future Brands; "Of late, there has been a Punjabisation of popular culture. All of India is following Punjabi things, its influence is increasing."

On the cricket field, Yuvraj Singh hit six consecutive sixes in IPL's first season of T-20 cricket while Harbhajan Singh became India's most successful offspin bowler by completing 300 wickets in test matches.

Cashing in on the mania, Bollywood icons started donning turbans.

From Salman Khan (in Heroes ) to Akshay Kumar, leading stars donned turbans to set the box office on fire.

Punjabi culture subsequently left its mark in Surinder Singh Sahni, the character Shah Rukh Khan played in the hit Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi to Abhay Deol's portrayal of Lucky Singh in Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye.

Saif Ali Khan and Ranbir Kapoor are also expected to be donning turbans in their upcoming movies directed by Imtiaz Ali and Shimit Amin, respectively.

Says film trade analyst Taran Adarsh; "Punjabi culture has always been a dominant influence on Bollywood and this year was no different. People with Singh in their names have given the country a reason to rejoice."

In business, Ranbaxy CEO Malvinder Singh proved that Cash is King, especially in times of an economic slowdown.

The Singhs managed to sell their family business to pharma company Daiichi of Japan for a whopping $1.6 billion in cash, just weeks before the stocks crashed on the Bombay Stock Exchange.

In politics, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh made history by winning the trust vote and getting the Indo-US nuclear deal cleared, ironically with the help of two Singhs - Amar Singh and Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Punjabi women, too, were not far behind in attaining glory. While Simran Kaur Mundi was crowned Femina Miss India Universe 2008, Google's President for Asia-Pacific (APAC) & Latin America operations, Sukhinder Singh Cassidy was named in Fortune's 50 Most Powerful Women in 2008.

Perhaps Navroze Dhondy, chief executive of Creatigies, a sports and celebrity management firm, best describes the factor that powers brand Singh; "Across the world, Singh and India have a very strong and tangible connect. The surname Singh means lion and if our lions cannot perform, then God help us."

Great Article

This was a good article, don't mind the haters. I know this comment will be the subject of flaming, but I actually liked Singh is Kinng. Yes, it was cheesy, and not 100% Sikhi, but the movie was about Sikh morals and values, turning people away from drugs/gangs and put that energy towards doing good deeds. Lucky Singh was the typical bumbling idiot charicture of Sikhs you see in many Hindi movies, but only in the beginning, in the end is a hero, who upholds morals and values. There was the typical Hindi movie dance scenes, but I wouldn't consider those parts as "part of the movie". Most of all, do you want to know what happens in the end? They return to their roots (Sikhi) and the last shot of them is with full grown beards.

Singh is Kinng

ssvirk83,harman,thaisingh,........ it fits in the frame of masala/commercial bombaia movie not a socalled art movie even. We can not and should not ignore the fact that producers need to recover their stakes with mark-up. They had to make it presentable to masses with element of needed entertainment. ssvirk has drawn a very clear picture of the fact. Punjab was the origin of Sikhism so all the Sikhs all over India are known and called as Punjabis. All the Sikhs all over the world are known as Indians because Punjab is one of the states of Union of India came in being on independence from Britain. thaisingh, all Sikhs are punjabis but all punjabis are not Sikhs is also well known fact. What I wrote above does not need any mention. Harman, we use to communicate through this media hence know each other. I repeat that I am not a practising hindu nor a devipoojak nor I like anything about socalled hinduism. Along the same lines I do not have any hatred or complaint against hindus or hinduism. They are neither better nor worse than the people of other faiths around us and on this planet. If we go deep into the history and origin of faiths we will find that hindu in fact is a geographical name of the people living around a particular area/region. There is no mention of hindu religion or hinduism in any of the scriptures related to socalled hinduism. This 'ism' was automatically and naturally added to the geographical name by and because of emergence of organised religions in middle east followed by series of natural and political developments for centuries and milleniums we have reached a stage where it is known as one of the faiths. As of attitude of GOI, constitution and socalled hindus towards Sikhs I can never ever agree that there is or was a special move or special plan or special agenda. Just go through the real facts and figure and think that; have muslims been doing the best to their fellow muslims ? Have christs been doing the best to their fellow christs ? Have hindus been doing the best to their fellow hindus ? Have sikhs been doing the best to their fellow sikhs ? Have all above been doing the best to each other. ANSWER IS, "NO" NOT AT ALL. This is human race full of human and natural problems !!!!!!! How happy , fulfilled and contented muslims of pak are feeling after having their own pak land on religious grounds. If you look at fertile land and ethnicity, pak was supposed to be heaven on the earth, it is opposite of that !!!!! what did they do to their fellow muslims in east. What is happening in afghanistan ? What is happening in your Punjab ? Who are ruling with the help of who ? THIS IS ALL POLITICS WITH SOLE PURPOSE OF POLITICS, FOR POLITICS ALL ALONG THE HISTORY OF HUMAN RACE. THINK OF TODAY AND TOMORROW. Dedicated Sikhs have been part and partial of GOI and its constitution. Sikhs have been most brilliant diplomats, bureaucrats, ministers, president and primeminister of GOI. I SALUTE SUKHDEV SINGH LIBRA AN AKALI MP WHO SAID THAT HE WILL NOT VOTE AGAINST A "SIKH PRIME MINISTER". This is the kind of ideology and philosophy we should develop rather than an ideology which multiplies hatred and divide thereby weakness. IF WE WANT TO CHANGE THE SYSTEM THEN BEST AND EASIEST WAY IS TO BECOME PART OF THE SYSTEM, NOT BY GETTING ISOLATED. Sat sri Akaal.

Harman Singh Ji, I am quite

Harman Singh Ji, I am quite impressed with the keen interest you are showing of late in posting your comments on this forum, quite obviously you seem to devote a lot of time to this task. But with due apologies I would like to say that itโ€™s not important or necessary to comment on everything. Like in Sikhism --- its not quantity but quality that matters. I feel sometimes in over enthusiasm you get carried away. I hope you don't my mind my interference in your seemingly favourite hobby/concern.

Waaooo......

Finally!!!! I've got a word of wisdom from a seemingly QUINQUAGENARIAN/ SEXAGENARIAN... With all due respect SIR/ MADAM!! I got what u said!! I'll stress on quality form now on... BTW!! Thank u so much for getting impressed and for ur kind info. Sikhnet absorbs only 30-45 mins a day and 4-5 days a week from my schedule... U know these 3-4 hrs a week are full of INFOTAINMENT!! And SIR/ MADAM!! I think LOVE is all about getting carried away!!!!..... I WON'T BE able to get carried away by the time I'll reach your age..... I hope YOU will exclude this reply from the list of my quality comments to be followed!!

Absolute naivety

This article seems to be written by teenage naive wirters who don't even know the difference between Punjabization and Sikhi..... When you go towards southern/ eastern part of India, people ask a very stupid but funny question, "Are u a Punjabi or are u a sikh ??" and you get so much bugged up... So u have to reply as, "Goddamit!! I'm both..... I'm a PUNJABI SIKH".. Jokes apart!! this article reminds me of those naive buffoons who don't realize the difference between Punjabi(ethnicity) and Sikhism(religion).... But something which I liked is that one of the writers of this article is a non-sikh.. I hope the Hindu community and the GOI want to confess whatever they've done to Sikhs in one way or the other/ All Hindus are not anti-sikh/ they're just playing around with our sentiments and capitalizing on our identity to make news..... Innumerable possibilities but missing out Ishmeet Singh's acievement looks like a malicious blunder than an unintended mistake.... GOD knows what the truth is. Anyways!! not a bad attempt to get attention....

sardar harman jee

sardar sahib jee i didnt like your joke ..let me explain it to you ,,,infect we in Thailand are not Punjabis but we are Sikhs so it gave me a bad taste. same people in other countries whose mother tongue is not a Punjabi is not a Punjabi. for us a person could be a Punjabi Sikh/Hindu/Muslim/christian/Jew so those people who ask you that question they are right and sorry to say you are wrong. ++++++++about 15 years back i was in south India and they did ask me same question and i replied i am a SIKH and not a Punjabi ++++++i hope you understand the difference every Sikh is not a Punjabi and every Punjabi is not a Sikh--------there are lot of Sikhs living in India who dont consider them selves as Punjabi but they are Sikhs they live in other states than Punjab---------- - i hope you understand, during my explanation if i hurt your feelings or religious sentiments or in any form ...i am sorry and i have no intentions to hurt you ....May Waheguroo bless you........***เจนเจฎ เจจเจนเฉ€ เจšเฉฐเจ—เฉ‡ เจฌเฉเจฐเจพ เจจเจนเฉ€ เจ•เฉ‹เจ‡ เฅฅ I am not good; no one is bad. เคนเคฎ เคจเคนเฅ€ เคšเค‚เค—เฅ‡ เคฌเฅเคฐเคพ เคจเคนเฅ€ เค•เฅ‹เค‡ เฅฅ***

ur reply is most welcome Thai Singh ji!!

I absolutely didn't mind what u wrote ... in fact, I should apologize as u didn't like my joke.... Actually culture is an equally important unifying factor as religion.... And the question that I was talking about seemed funny for the first couple of times but later on it became ethnically offensive for me and I was really bugged up by explaining the difference of a punjabi and a sikh to a couple of dozen ppl and then I actually gave up when I found that ppl made it an excuse to malign my culture or my religion one or the other way.... but it becomes a headache telling ppl around u time and again what exactly are u...

do we need?

Do we need all this balle balle from this hindu media? we all sikhs always live in CHARDIKALA so i think we do not need balle balle from these fake sikhs and hindu media. we have balle balle always with us given by our GURU SAHAIBS MAY WAHE GURU JI BLESS US WITH CHARDIKALA IN COMING NEW YEAR HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL THE SIKHS AROUND THE WORLD FROM US.

The greatest achievment was

The greatest achievment was made by Ishmeet Singh, who broke a trend when he became successful in the Voice of India contest and hence the Bollywood music industry. It is a shame that he has not been mentioned. Most of those mentioned are proud of their religous heritage, but do not abide by it. The actions of Akshay Kumar in Singh is Kinng was simply commercial. By wearing a turban for a few months, he made millions. That is not something to be proud of. Ishmeet wore his turban and kept his beard something which all these 'Singhs', except for Manmohan Singh, failed to do. Perhaps it was because of his true Sikh image and character that he was murdered, whilst others are reaping the success and fame of keeping Singh in their name. What's a Singh to do? http://www.ishmeetsinghfoundation.org/

Balle Balle

Showing the picture and giving the name of people who are no longer "Sikh" is really a shame for all of us. the real achivement of "Ishmeet Singh" has not been mentioned. As well the movie made by Mata Tripta Trust has not been mentioned. This is the first time such a great movie is out with real Sikh boy as a hero. any fake sikh, be it any popular hero of the Hindi films can not be compared with the hero of 'Sat Sri Akal'. This is a movie which gives positive message at the end and is a 'must see' for everyone with family. We need such movies in the years to come.

How many real turbans do we see here?

Amusing! How many turbans do we see here? Manmohan Singh and Harbhajan Singh in patka. The others in the pictures do not even identify themselves as Sikhs. Being Bollywood fodder is nothing great. It is foolish to let them commodify and objectify Sikhs and Sikh life style and culture. Why there are no pictures of real turbaned guys Ranbaxy's Singh brothers? Abhinav Singh and other guy look like puppets in those baniya hats. It is ridiculous Rahul Gandhi making statements about Sikhs. What has he done to alleviate the plight of 1984 pogrom? What Sikh life style is Ms Mundi promoting through objectification of women in beauty contests? Please use caution in picking news items. This item is just another example of our objectification.

Balle Balle

In what way are the Bindras portraying Sikhi (if it is their picture above). Both father and son are clean shaven wearing "Hindu Type" turbans .If I see them I would not recognise them Sikhs!

Also, we can add the name of

Also, we can add the name of Late Ishmeet Singh (Voice Of India, 2008".
