Sikhs Celebrate July 4th with Seva

July 13th, 2009

Fremont, CA – Residents of Fremont celebrated 4th of July with a parade like the past ten years. More than one hundred organizations and businesses participated in the parade and nearly ten thousand people watched it.

The Greater Fremont area has a significant population of Sikhs. A small civic-minded Sikh organization named S.E.V.A. has been participating in the 4th of July celebrations for the last seven years. This year again, its members prepared a Sikh-American themed float and distributed 8400 bottles of free chilled water at the parade.
Each water bottle was custom branded with a few facts about Sikhism. S.E.V.A members set up six water-serving stations alongside the 1.2 miles-long parade route and more than sixty of them worked tirelessly for five hours on stocking each station, handing out water bottles to their fellow citizens and cleaning up at the end. Several S.E.V.A. members spent long hours decorating the float a day earlier.

The larger community and parade organizers appreciate and recognize the spirit of selfless service exhibited by Sikhs at the parade. This year they were rewarded by People’s Choice Award by the parade organizers.

S.E.V.A. started participating in 4th July parades in order to dispel misconceptions about Sikhs and it has been making a perceptible difference year after year. Many have now started calling the S.E.V.A. members “water boys”.

They also shower them with words of gratitude when they are handed bottles of chilled water in the hot July sun. Some express their praise via e-mails. This year’s best one came from a parade participant who was part of a band. This fellow sent an e-mail right after the parade stating, “I would like to start off by thanking you for the water. I was in the police band holding the banner and I would have overheated if it weren't for you guys. I know we have different beliefs in god but bless you all for the selfless service you provided. Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you!”

S.E.V.A. is based in Fremont. Most of its members came together after September 11th, 2001. They have been operating in civic and inter-faith spheres at grass-roots level since then. Their efforts are helping them build strong bridges with the larger community. They encourage other Sikh organizations and community activists to participate in 4th of July celebrations in their respective cities and locales. It is their firm belief that such efforts go long ways in asserting our identity and place in the American society.

Any questions related to this can be sent to gurukesewadar@gmail.com. S.E.V.A. members would love to help any other organization start similar efforts.

Nihal Singh Ji, that is a

Nihal Singh Ji, that is a very good point. Lots of people with different religions faiths wear turbans and have last name Singh. KJsing, you have so much knowledge but why don't have any kind words to say to other Gursikhs. Parades are good it shows good will for all. On another topic I never understood why people replace their last names from 'Singh'. Since OUr Guru Maharaj's chose this Last name, and why is it now not good enough us. No one has any problem finding people with same last last name, it is just an excuse of their wicked mind. People are out of their minds to leave 'Singh' and the Grace of Such Great Guru Maharaj world has ever seen. "We change the world not by what we say or do but as a consequence of what we have become. Thus, every spiritual aspirant serves the world." - Dr. David R. Hawkins.

First Start With All Sikhs Becomming Pure.

If we are to deliver the message of our Gurus, we must forget about Hindu -Singh and Muslim -Turban. We must focus on the teachings of our Gurus and FOLLOW in their footsteps. 1400 Years ago Prophet Hasrat Mohammed introduced the teachings of the Koran and "HE WORE A TURBAN" 2000 Years ago Jesus Christ came upon this earth he had long hair and a beard, and he also covered his head as the Prophet Mohammed and all the previous prophets. You will NEVER find a picture or painting of Jesus's mother with her hair uncovered, Never! the perfect Sardini , She always covered her hair. Why do you think Muslim women cover their heads because they follow in the footsteps of the prophet Jesus's mother. The Turban is not a new thing, it was worn 5000 Years ago by Krishna Ji and 2 million years by Sri Ram Ji. Western civilization have no written history beyond 3000-3500 years ago , But Vedic Vaishnava Sanatan Dharma teachings goes back millions of years in the past of which the roots of Sikhism comes from. This is not mythology as Shivitee Brahmans with their limited knowledge puts it. So Please dont worry about Hindu-Singhs, these most unfortunate people are being mislead and misguided by demogod worshipping brahmins and their children are becoming Homosexuals and Lesbians, Hindu Brahmans have destroyed their spiritual life, Hindus only hope is to follow Gurbani if they are to believe in Reincarnation and karma, if we are NOT careful we will become just like Hindu Singh's. who have been destroyed by fallen and impure Hindu Shivitee and Shakta Hindu Brahmins. Please remember intelligent people in the west are not ignorant of our teachings.

To K.J. Singh's points

Dear K.J., you have a valid point about our community falling short on following Guru Sahib's teachings in general but I don't agree with your suggestion that we should associate Singh with turban or "baptism". There are millions of Hindus who also use Singh as their last name and then there are millions of Hindus and Muslims who wear turbans. How would you explain the distinctions to Westerners on a bottle label where space is so limited? I also object to your use of term "baptism" while referring to Khande Di Pahul. This term is deeply rooted in Christian ethos and conveys a very different meaning to a Westerner. Besides the literal meaning of baptism falls short on capturing the spirit of Pahul. I don't think there is any word in English language that equates Pahul but the word "initiation" comes pretty close. Overall, I think SEVA has done a wonderful job on the label design. And distributing thousands of water bottles with short and precise messages about Sikhi at such parades is a very effective way of educating the Western masses. Kudos to SEVA and all of its members!

For some reason, Sikhs still

For some reason, Sikhs still keep misstating that Sikhism is fifth largest religion in the world...

Caste Concious Names

Dear Veer ji, I agree with ur comments 110% . There are many Sikh brothers who affix their so-called surnames after their names . The problem has become so severe that some have stopped writing " Singh " after their names . I asked some of them the reason behind this . They gave reason that it denotes some individuality , some personal recoginition since a surname of SINGH makes it too common . I read some where that some 180 million Chinese have LEE as their surnames , compare that with some 12 million Singhs & about 12 million Kaurs , we immediately realise the futility of such logic . They have something else on their minds .

Point #7. Sikhs who are Baptised their Spiritual Name is "Singh"

There are many Sikhs who do NOT follow the instruction of the tenth Guru Gobind Singh Ji , they are cast conscious similar to Hindu Brahmins, although they are very nice Sikhs they unfortunately destroy the 100% Purity of the religion, and unless we correct this fault we will continue to pollute this most beautiful religion in- spite of all the bottles of cool water we give at parades. We must start on a strong spiritual footing here in the west. Let the name "SINGH" be familiar with the Turban and the Sikh faith. In this way we are constantly reminded of Guru Ji. Any other last name strictly speaking makes us cast conscious Hindu -Sikhs. Future generation Sikhs will marry non-sikhs with the same cast names. We do not mean to offend any one but we must correct our mistakes of the past. This statement will offend lots of our brothers and sisters but we must be truthful with our self. Would Guru Gobind Singh Ji approve of cast conscious names? This is a strong statement and I fell bad making it , but its for the good of this religion. It is better to have 5 pure ones than 5000 impure Sikhs. Guru Gobing Singh Ji's last name was NOT "Singh" it was Rai, but he got the " Transcendental Shakti" from the nectarian name Singh or Lion , having administered amrit to all 5 including himself. and having drank from the same bowl . We are not drinking from the same bowl with cast conscious names. Wah Wah Gobind Singh.
