October 26th, 2009

FRESNO, CA - Jakara Movement is pleased to announce the launch of the Fall 2009 Jakara Junior camps.  Twice a year, the Jakara Movement organizes children’s camps in 12 regions throughout California.  During the months of October and November, Jakara Junior camps will be held in commemoration of 1984.

The camps will focus on the theme of  “A Nation Never Forgets” and children will learn age-relevant information about the role 1984 played in Sikh history.  The first two camps were held on October 24th, 2009 in Fresno and Kerman with over 150 children in attendance.

The camps were extremely successful in bringing youth together to teach their younger brothers and sisters about Sikh history.

Through Gurbani, readings, arts and crafts, films and presentations – children learned about 1984.  All teaching material was designed specifically for each age group.

The Jakara Junior camps are open to all children, ages 5 and above.

Camps will be held in the following cities: Sacramento, San Diego, Fremont, Turlock/Livingston, Los Angeles, Orange County, Stockton, Yuba City, San Jose and Riverside.  Parents are encouraged to register their children for the Jakara Junior Camps.  Dates are as follows:

ABOUT THE JAKARA MOVEMENT
The Jakara Movement seeks to encourage engagement with Sikh culture through education, research, and community outreach initiatives.  Founded in 2000, the Jakara Movement began as a collegiate conference, but has evolved into an institution for the recruitment and training of volunteers and a hub for the Sikh Californian youth. With a focus on the interstices of education, health, gender, and social justice, the Jakara Movement inclusively engages large sections of the Sikh youth in various projects to strengthen their identity and consciousness as Sikhs, foster education through service-learning, and inspire activism and volunteerism within the greater Qaum.

Thank You Jakara!!

It is of the utmost importance that the future generation learn about the events of June and November 1984. Till this day there is no memorial for the thousands of victims (Sikh Halocaust). We must remember them each and every year.

Its really good to hear that

Its really good to hear that JAKARA are doing a camp to remember those Gurikhs that gave their lives to protect the honour of Sikhs worldwide. In the UK there are numerous Youth Camps/Keertan Darbars going on across UK letting our youth know the truth about what haapened to Sikhs in 1984. It's so sad that a few Sikhs have fallen prey to Indian Propoganda and actually believes that Sikhs deserved what happened to them in 1984. Well, we the youth are the future and we are going to tell the true story to our youth and to the World! Well Done JAKARA, please let us all know how the camp goes.

Thoughts

Dear Jakara rep, I fail to understand that you are concentrating talking about 1984 and say that you are not even going to bring jarnail Singh in picture. How is that? How can you not talk about the destruction of Golden Temple without having the main character in the drama. How can you not talk about bunkerization of entire complex. How can you not talk about the bigoted utterances of Jarnail Singh. Also i just saw on the internet that Jakara launched two scholarships for high school students and a college student in the name of Bhai Amrik Singh, follower of Bhindrawala and who died in the operation bluestar. What kind of role model we are making out of this dude who destroyed the only Sikh body- All India Sikh Students Federation- by making into an armed militant group. This was the breeding ground for Sikh young political leaders which produced almost all the active leaders in the last 50 years. ANyone who is well known has been a member of AISSF. What did this non student leader of AISSSF that he converted into a armed group which took responsibility of blowing up of 35 railway stations in April 84. This is well known that the plan to blow up these structures was done under his presence and on top of AKal Takhat. What is his contribution in education? What did he do to inspire Sikh young people and to what action. Dying in a head on collision and creating a massive collateral damage is no bravery. Living for your ideas is more difficult and persuading masses to your thinking is really brave. I hope Jakara people will do some introspection and not hide behind facts. They need to admit that they are treading on a slippery slope which is one day will lead them in a ditch along with innocent fresh minds that they are trying to alter.

1984

Nobody disagree with all the terrible things and crime Congress party did against Sikhs in 1984. It should be condemned and we should teach how a political philosophy blinds people to commit most heinous crimes on each other. But my friend, we also need to admit what Bhindrawala and his chelas were doing in Darbar Sahib and prior to Bluestar was also not something that we can be proud of. Many killings were taking place within the Golden temple complex. You did not at all say a thing about the bhindra's utterances 'i will kill 5000 hindus in a day or each Sikh can 'take care' of 35 Hindus' What about that. Would not that incite enough Hindus to go after Sikhs? What would rest of bengalis, gujaratis, oriyas and etc thinking about Sikhs that what kind of religion and people these are. That a guy is threatening to kill innocent people who have nothing to do with this political showdown. What kind of boiling point Bhindrawla was aiming at. I condemn what congress did to us in Nov 84 and I also equally cannot condone as a Sikh what Bhindrawala and his followers did. Unless we come to terms with this and put the blame where it lies, we as a community cannot move forward. tree falling and moving the ground is outrageous statement by Rajiv. Similarly threatening to kill innocent people and killing political opponents is also a crime. Who killed Giani Partap singh, Former Jathedar of Akal Takhat who criticized the fortification of AKal Takhat. Who threatened to kill Khuswant Singh who had the guts and perhaps the only Sikh who condemned Bhindrawala's tactics. How can we keep quiet to this stuff than and even now after 25 years later, it is beyond me.

1984, let's talk about it..............

1984. Let's revisit that historic year in Sikh history. The Indian Army stormed the Golden Temple on the martrydom day of Guru Arjan Dev Ji. What should and could have been a professional military operation was a diabolical event.....done on a day when the holiest Sikh shrine in the world would be packed with pilgrims. The timing was deliberate..... There enough CID and moles inside of Punjab at the time to have known and relayed that this would be a day of celebration for the Sikhs the Temple would be jam-packed. Out of 5,000 people, only 50 people were militants. Less than 100 people survived the attack. You would have thought that with a professional military carrying an acute assignment, that at least half the people would survive? Or how about 1/4th of the people? Hundreds of survivors were tied with their hand behind their backs. Old people, and children included. They were shot in the backs of their heads, execution style. This is not opinion. This is fact - like it or not, believe it or not.....it happened. The real atrocities were committed after the attack was over, when survivors, mostly pilgrims, were murdered.....by soldiers. They did not spare children.....Some members of Sikhnet are not even old enough to remember what 1984 felt like as a Sikh. I do. I will never forget. The Delhi Riots.....were not riots. Riots are when things are out of control....things were in control. Congress Pary organizers sent buses and trucks out to surrounding rural villages to round up youth to bring into the city of Delhi.....paid them to kill all Sikhs on sight. The rioters arrived in Delhi on government vehicles.....with police escorts. The Sikh members of the Delhi Police were quarantined and disarmed.....all Sikhs who were registered gun owners were visited by Police and disarmed.......for their own "safety". Sikh homes were available on municipal maps which the police had and used to lead rioters to Sikh homes. In many cases, houses were searched for weapons, swords and sticks were confiscated and then the rioters were "unleashed" with the supervision of the Police. Gurudwaras were searched and disarmed. Sikhs were not allowed to gather in one place so that a good defense could not be built. The army was prohibited from entering Delhi for three days even though Delhi was on fire....Sikh women were raped in front of their children....Their husbands and sons beaten and then burned to death, mostly with a tire around their neck and kerosene.....When the rioters ran out of gasoline, the Police allowed them to siphon gas from their Jeeps. In 72 hours, 10,000 innocent Sikhs were burned to death in the streets of Delhi. Thousands more raped and injured.....Hundreds of children and their body parts lay on the streets of Delhi.....While Rajiv Gandhi justifies it and endorses this by saying "when a big tree falls, the Earth shakes". Let us never forget 1984. I know the Sikhs of Delhi have not. In fact, in every other Sikh house in Delhi, there are guns and rifles - legal or not. They learned the lesson of being unarmed and will never make that same mistake again. This time, if rioters did come, it would be a different story. The cops and rioters would be killed. My Uncle, who survived the riots, has two swords (not ceremonial).....heavy swords.....one revolver and one shotgun. If the cops ever came to his door to disarm him, the cop better being wearing a turban. Sikhs will never be disarmed again after 1984. Let us never forget 1984. All the people who were martyred deserve better from us. We owe them the respect of not ever forgetting what happened. It is not OK and never will be OK. We squeal like pigs for justice yet nobody listens to us in India or abroad.....as if the value of a Sikh life is not as valuable as others. You know what, you would have to a victim or know someone who was to have the passion I do ..... Some of you will never understand what it means to be a Sikh in 1984.

Camp about 1984

What is the intention of Jakara Movement? To educate the Young Sikh children to know about what happened in 1984? Will they talk about everything honestly and talk about where we went wrong too? Is the intention to educate Sikh children about Bhindrawala and talk bout how he was the greatest Sikh on the planet? Will they talk about he was planted in the Sikh politics? How he was arrested in a staged setting with his own choosing and amidst violence? How Dal Khalsa was created by Congress and how they hijacked a plane with Kirpan to Pakistan to get him released from Jail? HOw he was released with no case and made him into a bigger than life hero for Sikhs that no body coudl challenge? How he occupied rooms in Golden temple complex and gave orders to his opponents to lie down or face danger? HOw he advocated lay Sikh youth to take up arms openly against state? How he threatened that he woudl kill 5000 Sikhs in one day if his two buses are not released by police? how he claimed openly in press and on stage that each Sikh can take care of 35 hindus? How there was violence daily in punjab and in the darbar sahib complex and among his followeres and Babbar Khalsa.? how he fortified the entire darbar sahib complex and made bunker out of AKal Takhat? Sand bags and pigeon holes to kill anyone coming to arrest him? What woudl be outcome of this all and where was this leading? No brainer buddies? I wish jakara collegiates woudl concentrate on their own studies and create good role models for these innocent and fresh minds rather them turning them into talibans and making them pschological victims of this wanton propaganda? where is the role of these parents ? Ihope you are not outsourcing your own parent hood to these zealots. Parents have the role to educate youth themselves about facts. 84 massacres of Delhi was the greatest heinour crime against Sikhs by congress and It shoudl be condemned in uncertain terms. equally we need to condemn what our own people did to bring this onslaught on our community in darbar Sahib and in the streets of Delhi. Each thing led to the next level of crime against each other and greatest pain and suffering. Our community suffered greatly and we have not recovered from the pain but what lessons we have learnt? These Jakara people are certainly preparing youngsters for another victimhood? I hope our young children become leaders of America with positive outlook to life and not be backward looking and backward approach to life. May Guru gives these jakara people some sense.

Thoughts

Raminderjit, As an organizer for the Jakara Movement, I thank you for your concern and criticism. I would hope however, that you wouldn't conclude that the 'Guru should give us some sense', after you make a whole slew of claims on what we are and aren't doing that have no basis. All of the claims that you make cannot be gleaned from the article that Sikhnet posted, the materials presented on our website, nor from any of the content that we are presenting to the sangat this year. So, the larger question becomes, why have we become the target of your angst towards the ways in which some Sikhs have mobilized around 1984? While there is little to be gained from an answer to this question, I will tell you our intentions and what we are doing in our camps. Our intentions are to educate young Sikhs about the events of 1984 in Amritsar and Delhi. That is simple. In fact, we make little reference to Jarnail Singh and instead focus on the events themselves, and the certain kinds of losses that occurred. We are not here to indoctrinate young children, nor are we attempting to be the end-all be-all resource for our participants. Instead we hope to open up a space for inquiry and critical thinking about events that our community in ways still remains silent about. The beauty of the Jakara organization in my view, is that is comprised of Sikhs from many different religious, class, educational, and ideological backgrounds. Such diversity eschews the possibility of extremism. I see from your profile that you are not in California, where our efforts are based. I encourage you to call/email us, and we'd be happy to discuss our content and goals in a more concrete manner. As an aside, we are also launching a campaign to increase awareness and decrease the practice of sex-selective abortion, we are organizing a graduate student conference for this February, and we are helping to put Sikh Students Organizations together to facilitate better programming and sangat. Perhaps these projects, better than a response on Sikhnet speak better to our aims and activities. May the Guru bless you in every way possible.

Lessons of 1984

Though I agree with your comments that Bhindranwale was planted by Zial Singh & Indira to break stranglehold of Akalis over Akal Takhat , SGPC . He was made hero in eyes of media ( also demonised ). Giani Zial Singh also funded & formed DAL KHALSA . But most of the killings in Punjab in 1983-84 were done by Congress & Police touts to defame Bhindranwale who was probabely enjoying all the limelight & power unaware of the trap that was being set in Media & Newspapers by Congress using his statements . Most of the arms were supplied by Indira inside the Golden Temple while Bhindranwale was passing judgements in his own set court . The end result was Operation Bluestar as planned by Indira & Gen Sunderji . Even today I can say without any iota of doubt that all orgainsations singing praises of Bhindranwale & Khalistan are on Congress payrolls . Congress propagated the word KHALISTAN , portrayed Sikhs as terrorists so that it could win the sympathy of 80% of Hindus while promoting itself as the Savior of Unity & integrity of India . The Congress win post 1984 election was a record 410 ( approx ) seats which was never achieved since 1947 & never since then also . By eating the BAIT of Khalistan & Bhindranwale ( though what he did on 4-6 June 1984 made him immortal ) we are treading into the same path of death & destruction . Also IMHO we should try to teach younger generation about the exact cause & players of 1984 in plain non-romanticising language so that future occurences of similar kind maybe avoided & also justice for 1984 victims maybe achieved .

talking about 84

Jakara Movement looks like is trying to educate about 1984. What is the intention here? To create Sikh Extremists? To create Future Sikh leaders who would become leaders of America or American Bhindrawla? Would they educate them ever how every immigrant comminity is involved and creating their impact in American scene? How Sikh young people are being brainwashed by groups like Jakara, SRI Institute and UNited Sikhs where Bhindrawla is being presented as the greatest messiah of the Sikhi. How Sikhs are the greatest victims of this planet. I wonder whether they will be honest bout the caused of 84 violence in Golden temple? Will they talk about how Bhindrawala came in the scene and how he was planted? How Dal Khalsa was created by Congress? How they hijacked the plane to create bigger than life size of Bhindrawla so nobody can challenge him? HOw he and his followers created violent atmonsphere in Golden temple killing or threatening their opponents? How Babbar Khalsa challenged Bhindra's hegemony and he shifted to Akal takhat and later fortified the entire Harmander Complex. Sandbags and pigeon holes were created to fight any opposing forces? How people were killed daily? How Manjit Singh and Other Bhindrawla followeres hatched the scheme openly over Akal Takhat to blow up 35 railway stations ( open secret)? Will they tell kids that Bhindrawala threatened to kill 5000 Hindus if police would not let his two buses go or Sikhs can easily take care of 35 hindus. Now we want to talk about only what indira did to us but not want to talk about what our goons did to attract this onslaught on the community. 84 Massacres in Delhi was the most heinous crime against Sikhs. We want them to punish the guilty and apoligize. Good expectations. But what bout our responsibility in correct assesment of history and condemn what our people did to have this brought on the entire community. I wonder whether Sikh parents want their kids to become victims of this propaganda or brain washing or they would take the responsibility to educate their own kids about Sikh history without any political tint. May Sikh youth liberate themselves from these propaganda machines of Khalistan groups and concentrate on going ahead in life with positive outlook.
